Will there ever be a better score in a match between Dublin and Kerry?

As points go, this wasn’t half bad.

THERE’LL BE PLENTY top class forwards on show in Croke Park for Sunday’s All-Ireland semi-final.

The established class of Bernard Brogan, Colm Cooper and Declan O’Sullivan.

The emerging talent of Ciaran Kilkenny, Paul Mannion and James O’Donoghue.

With that wealth of attackers on show, the chances are we’ll get some good scores on the board.

But they’ve a long way to go to match this beauty from Maurice Fitzgerald in Semple Stadium back in 2001.

Will there ever be a better score in a match between Dublin and Kerry?

There’s too many dubs who are Dublin supporters but not GAA supporters. Half the fans don’t watch a single game after Dublin are eliminated. Total bandwagon support

and sure isn’t it great that the GAA and the Dublin teams are so good and playing such exciting football and hurling that it can attract the masses.

Every county has bandwagoners. But if a few hang around for the league and become true GAA supporters from it then whats the problem?

I stood behind Maurice on the terrace watchin this kick.I saw Maurice talking to Paidi and the Dublin manager Tommy Carr trying to put him off.Ice cool Maurice just took aim and as the ball sailed effortlessly towards the post my mouth opened wider n wider n wider with disbelief and mayhem unfolded among the Kerry throng. What a day it was. Many of the dubs supporters actually got lost that day with them been taken out of the comforts of croke park.It was a day that even Bertie walked freely among the supporters to the ground as well.Good Times !

I remember seeing Maurice bounce it through his legs basketball style while evading two tacklers in Croker. Forget who it was against. What a player. An absolute joy to watch and so unorthodox. Ciaran McDonald was another. Different level of skill.

Amazing score. I know Cluxtons point was a pressure kick and a great score it was, but the skill to score that point over was brillant. I honostly believe I have never seen a better score in Gaelic football in my lifetime.

There was more pressure on Fitzgerald than Cluxton. If Cluxton missed there would of been a replay, missing did not mean it was over for Dublin. Fitzgerald had to curl it from the sideline at distance with the Dublin manager giving him abuse, to earn Kerry a replay, if he missed Kerry were out. Clearly there is no contest, for skill and pressure Fitzgeralds was the better point.

That score is the best I’ve ever seen. Being a huge Dublin fan, I have massive respect for Kerry. I don’t buy into this hatred for the kingdom. Dublin and Kerry have a knack of getting the best out of each other and that’s what makes the rivalry special for me. Up the dubs! Sunday can’t come quick enough!

Dublin v Kerry the irish version of “el clasico” no other match up in GAA comes close. Think of all the great moments from down the years that occurred in these matches. Hope it’s another classic and the Dubs can do it, either way looking forward to it.

I always feel that Meath v Dublin are great occasions. Maby not in the last 10 years but when I was a kid (late 80s early 90s) they were unmissable.
For me it is one of the greatest rivalries in the GAA.
Im not from Meath or Dublin by the way.

As a Kerry supporter I have never thought there was any kind of hatred. Healthy banter. Love Kerry Dublin games more than any. Not just because they are usually great football matches and occasions, but because the Dubs are great to have the craic with after. Dublin are rightly favourites and I’m looking forward to whatever happens… And by that I mean Kerry winning of course :)

Hatred in not a word I associate with Kerry v Dublin matches. The utmost respect I have for all that Kerry have achieved over the years and especially the style with which they play. Mickey Sheehy, genius, Maurice Fitz and The Gooch were the icing on the cake of great Kerry teams and you could only admire their great skill. So looking forward to the next one and hoping it will be a great one.

It’s not the dubs fault they aren’t allowed travel. I was at that game. The game was delayed from the amount coming down from Dublin. We love away games when we get the chance. Great atmosphere and Maurice as he could do pulled it out of the bag with a bit of class. We wouldn’t be even talking about that point today if Dublin could hit a barn door during that game. Some point though

Yes. I was there too, supporting Kerry. If Dublin took a couple of those handy points instead of going for goal it could of been different. The Dubs had some good goal chances though of I remember right, including hitting the crossbar.

Was there too, but on the opposite side to Fitzgerald so couldn’t see the way it curled over. Wayne McCarthy had a super chance to steal it at the end but couldn’t land an easier dead-ball than Maurice Fitz’s.

The way ye’re talking it’s as if Maurice Fitz was knocking this over in a challenge match. The hype for this match was massive.it was the first year of the qualifiers, the Dubs played at a neutral venue(god be with the days),and Kerry were defending champions.Kerry blew an 8 point lead in the last 10 minutes and were a point down in the dying minutes.
The pressure on Fitz was massive.Cluxton’s was a well taken free, but in terms of skill and degree of difficulty there’s no comparison.

There was something in the clip that just didn’t sit right with me, I couldn’t put my finger on it.

Was it Dublin losing? No, I had seen that plenty of times.

Was it a Dublin manager trying to intimate the position player? No, it’s an that before as well.

Was it Maurice Fitz scoring a cracker? No, I’d definitely seen that before.

Ahhhhhhh, that’s it, the Dubs playing in a pitch that isn’t Croke Park….

This is probably Fitzgerald’s greatest score but it is a pity in a way that this is about the only piece of his genius we see these days. So many sublime moments…the Fitz All Ireland Final, the Cavan game a week later, his first Munster Final v Cork and so much in between. Of course, only the lucky few got to watch in awe at what he was doing for the Mary’s from under 12′s to very recently. Enough to fill a DVD library.
