Massive ban for Liverpool star Suarez in race row verdict

The Uruguay striker is facing eight games on the sidelines after Patrice Evra racism row verdict.

LIVERPOOL STRIKER LUIS Suarez has tonight been handed a eight-match ban and a hefty £40,000 fine for racially abusing Manchester United’s Patrice Evra.

The Old Trafford defender insisted he was racially abused ‘up to 10 times’ by the Uruguayan during the 1-1 draw at Anfield in October.

“An Independent Regulatory Commission has today found a charge of misconduct against Luis Suarez proven,” an FA statement reads, “and have issued a suspension for a period of eight matches as well as fining him £40,000, pending appeal.”

English Association chiefs said any ban would not start until the outcome of any appeal.

Liverpool, meanwhile, hit back quickly, issuing a long statement which beings: “Liverpool Football Club is very surprised and disappointed with the decision of the Football Association Commission to find Luis Suarez guilty of the charges against him.

“We look forward to the publication of the Commission’s Judgment.  We will study the detailed reasons of the Commission once they become available, but reserve our right to appeal or take any other course of action we feel appropriate with regards to this situation.

“We find it extraordinary that Luis can be found guilty on the word of Patrice Evra alone when no-one else on the field of play – including Evra’s own Manchester United teammates and all the match officials – heard the alleged conversation between the two players in a crowded Kop goalmouth while a corner kick was about to be taken.

“The Club takes extremely seriously the fight against all forms of discrimination and has a long and successful track record in work relating to anti-racist activity and social inclusion.  We remain committed to this ideal and equality for all, irrespective of a person’s background.

“LFC considers racism in any form to be unacceptable – without compromise.  It is our strong held belief, having gone over the facts of the case, that Luis Suarez did not commit any racist act.  It is also our opinion that the accusation by this particular player was not credible – certainly no more credible than his prior unfounded accusations.

“It is key to note that Patrice Evra himself in his written statement in this case said ‘I don’t think that Luis Suarez is racist’.  The FA in their opening remarks accepted that Luis Suarez was not racist. Luis himself is of a mixed race family background as his grandfather was black.  He has been personally involved since the 2010 World Cup in a charitable project which uses sport to encourage solidarity amongst people of different backgrounds with the central theme that the colour of a person’s skin does not matter; they can all play together as a team.

“He has played with black players and mixed with their families whilst with the Uruguay national side and was Captain at Ajax Amsterdam of a team with a proud multi-cultural profile, many of whom became good friends.

“It seems incredible to us that a player of mixed heritage should be accused and found guilty in the way he has based on the evidence presented. We do not recognise the way in which Luis Suarez has been characterised. It appears to us that the FA were determined to bring charges against Luis Suarez, even before interviewing him at the beginning of November. Nothing we have heard in the course of the hearing has changed our view that Luis Suarez is innocent of the charges brought against him and we will provide Luis with whatever support he now needs to clear his name.”

The player, for his part, took to Twitter to make his own statement.

“Today is a very difficult and painful day for both me and my family. Thanks for all the support, I’ll keep working!..,” he wrote, on the social media site tonight.

  • It’ll be interesting to see if John Terry gets the same treatment, given that he was clearly seen to yell racist abuse to Anton Ferdinand and he’s England captain.

England captain John Terry should receive a 16 game ban since there is no argument that a language barrier existed between him and Ferdinand. Most likely the FA who probably emailed the police themselves to report Terry for racism will use the Crown prosecutors failing to proceed with charges to not punish Terry,

If he’s guilty , his ban should have been longer but the fact that Terry’s up on a the same charge the FA won’t want him banned for any longer the 8 matches with Euro 2012 next summer

Let’s see if the FA take the QPR players word for it over John Terry. Don’t think so with Terry been England Captain going to the Euro’s. Double standards again. Same with Rooneys ban, FA fought against it. When in the premier league they do the opposite

  • Touchy subject, but for me after reading the statement I think it was the wrong decision, no clear evidence and no other witnesses, would love to see the evidence which they used to charge him.

  • This is the second time evra has called the race card he was thrown out the first time if he kept saying it he had to have some luck . When he couldn’t get the better of him on the field he had to resort to dirty tactics evra should be embrassed of him self

    • If you understood the first case you wouldn’t be writing blind comments like that.

Did Evra say he was racially abuse by the Chelsea steward?
Did Evra report the steward for this?
When as at the hearing if he heard what the steward said, what was Evras response?

And this is the 3rd time that Suarez is facing charges, so he is the victim?

Embarrassing stuff from yourself there, understand the cases first, then comment.

Paul, evra didn’t report the incident in Stamford bridge, it was reported by other man utd players.
Less emotion more facts please! Don’t forget that Suarez admitted calling evra a negrino. The question is: did he understand the meaning of this word in the uk?

      Reply
    • 1. You don’t know what he admitted to saying, that’s just what newspapers have said.
      2. The word “negrito” means nothing in English. It is not an offensive word in the slightest, it is only ever used as a term of endearment in Spanish speaking countries
      3. Evra’s testimony to the commission in 2008 was called “exaggerated and misleading”

LFC statement is factually inaccurate – Evra never made any previous racism accusations. In the issue with the Chelsea groundsman it was a MUFC coach who alleged the groundsman made the racist comment not Evra.

  • This will not stand up to an appeal, Evra as a person has proved himself to be a prick who will always be a prick. I know what racism is & can do to a person but we cannot find people guilty on the accusers word alone especially someone who has cried wolf on previous occasions. This would not happen in a court of law, so why football ?

Oh ya, he admitted it. SIMPLES or maybe as dear Rafa said, FACT.

  • Suarez used the word negro.and he admitted that…it doesnt matter if its not a non racial term in uruguay it is in the UK or Ireland and is not acceptable….
the term ‘well bollocks’ is a well used phase of endearment in my local pub, but I doubt that if I said that to a cop that I’d get away with claiming its not abusive in wider society.
Evra did abuse him, but didnt racially abuse him – if suarez or liverpool wanted to make that accusation they should have made a complaint not cried about it after.

He has gone and cost LFC a 4th place and 20m + with his mouth, I don’t see LFC fining him now either for his misconduct, speaks volumes really.

And its worrying the amount of people on here who seem to be supporting racism and Suarez who admitted it using a derogatory word.

Having a black grandfather and having a long record of working alongside black people without issue is a bit different than the typical “i have a black friend” excuse that most racists use to judge an entire people. If he thought what he said was racist he probably would not have admitted it. Words have different meanings and interpretations around the world.

Suarez in particular admitting that he used term “negrito” finished him. Yes it might be acceptable in Uruguay, but he has been living in Europe long enough now to know that it is not acceptable in our culture.

  • First of all, it’s impossible to give an informed comment on a judgement that hasn’t yet been published.

2nd, that Liverpool statement is appalling. Let’s kick racism out of football…as long as it isn’t our player.

Lastly, this has no real relevance to the John Terry case. He is under police investigation, so FA are least of his worries.

    • so kangaroo court justice is ok with you then. this is a disgraceful abuse of power..evra admits abusing suarez in spanish about his heritage but no charge..evra has previous for lying..suarez accepts he used a term that is not considered racist in uruguay but gets 8 game ban! for first offence.evra even stated in hiscwritten statement that he believes suarez is not a racist.disgraceful decision

    • The club believe what was said wasn’t racist and are defending their player, don’t see what’s wrong with that.

This whole case is a farce. Nobody else in a crowded goalmouth heard what Evra’s alleges was said, none of the officials heard it, none of the mics picked it up and none of the cameras caught it being said. Evra has a history of lying about racism (he accused referee Andre Marriner of only booking him because he’s black IN THE SAME GAME and he was banned in 2008 for lying to a commission saying he was racially abused by a Chelsea groundsman) and yet his testimony is the sole basis of this conviction.

The lad’s life has been ruined by this, everywhere he goes he’ll get abuse. The alleged word “negrito” isn’t an insult in Uruguay or other Spanish speaking countries. They can’t believe what’s going on.

    • At the end of the day, the facts were carefully considered, and the verdict delivered in due course. It is pretty simple really. It will be interesting to see how Liverpool’s sponsors react. They might not want to be associated with anything to do with this.

      @Colm
Evra does not have previous for lying and he clearly did not lie in this instance. Mike Phelan made those allegations at Chelsea. And the term that Suarez used was definitely racist, as he has been found guilty.

From the Telegraph: “The fact that he uttered the term “negrito” during the heat of battle between two such fierce rivals, Liverpool and Manchester United, to Fabrice Evra, a player he has no history of friendship with, arguably undermines any claim that the Uruguay striker was being amicable.”

You think there is nothing wrong with this? Evra was absolutely right to react in the way he that he did, and the court agreed.

      @Paul
With that statement Liverpool basically “ah he can’t be racist, sure he has black friends”. Plus in that statement they undermine Evra’s credibility and then use his statement to defend Suarez, which is pretty bizarre.

      Reply
  • I find it hard to understand why people can’t accept this. Firstly, 8 games is not long and secondly there was a thorough investigation where all the facts were laid out. Sometimes football players make mistakes. Issues such as racism and homophobia are above the clubs we support.

  • I was just waiting for Dalglish to come out with the victim line. It’s annoying how spineless some people are. As much sac I respect Suarez as a being talented his constant diving, feigning injury, waving the fake yellow for players to be booked and giving the middle finger to the crowd are consistent with someone who I wouldn’t consider to be too pure if character. Also that the defence of him by saying that he’s played with loads of different races before so how can he be racist is laughable. Suarez could be the most racist guy in the world but if you pay him 100k a week I guarantee he quickly forgets about colour!

Its really puts the supporters of Suarez through this into a dim light and those who continue it are glorified sympathizers. The LFC statement has been commented on throughout the internet and its embarrassing. The level of victimization from LFC is cringy.
As for the conspiracy theories, Suarez has a history of conflict whether it be with players or fans. His career is ruined, by himself.

He has been found guilty, the carry on by LFC is really does not show a good picture.

Its quite simple, he admitted to it, he will have a nice holiday now with the other 3 match ban down the line for 1 fingered salute.

He is indefensible, if it was Rooney who called Johnson negrito would we have the same blinkered reaction from LFC????? Fans from other clubs all the see the wrong in it, it goes beyond football rivalry, unfortunately LFC don’t have that ability.

LFC won with this fight with the FA, they will just look foolish.

He deserves what he is getting.

LFC with a character assassination on Evra now could be in even more hot water. We know that Evra isn’t a likely person but LFC have just shot themselves in the foot with their official statement.

If you go again to another case of the couple who got 3 months jail for having sex on a beach in Dubai, why didn’t they get off “cause its ok back home”…
