Double joy: Martyn Irvine secures gold and silver at Track World Championships

He had previously set a new Irish record by qualifying for the final in 4:20.246.

IRISH CYCLIST MARTYN Irvine has won gold in the 15km scratch at the Track Cycling World Championships in Minsk this afternoon.

It is the Irishman’s second success of the day, after he secured a men’s individual pursuit silver earlier.

He finished ahead of Andreas Müller of Austria and Kwok Ho Ting of Hong Kong with a time of 17:23.505.

In his first race, Irvine finished in 4:24.528, just a few seconds behind Australia’s Michael Hepburn, who won with a time of 4:16.733.

Irvine had previously set a new Irish record by qualifying for the final in 4:20.246.

    are you sure they’re the first medals for ireland in that long … the irish times is claiming we had another medalist last year on the womens side of things.

    definitely not Ireland’s first medals at the world track cycling in 116 years..     sounds like great result. I know nothing about cycling so forgive me for this ignorant comment but does that out him on with the guys that where winning in the Olympics ?? where they in the field ??
