MARTIN PENROSE’S ALL-Ireland semi-final ban has been upheld because he did not submit his appeal before the required deadline.
The Tyrone forward was hit with a one-match suspension by the Central Competitions Control Committee (CCCC) after he was sent off for striking Monaghan’s Dessie Mone in the quarter-finals .
Although the incident was caught by the TV cameras, Penrose requested a hearing in a bid to have the punishment overturned and allow him to face Mayo on 25 August.
But the Central Hearings Committee (CHC) say that he did not lodge his request in time.
“The Hearings Committee found that the request for a hearing was not submitted within the period allowed for doing so and that the original penalty proposed by the CCCC applies,” a statement issued this morning read.
It emerged last night that Penrose’s Tyrone team-mate Conor Gormley will be available for the semi-final after the CHC overturned a proposed ban for his involvement in the same incident.
Referee Cormac Reilly took no action at the time and the Hearings Committee decided that “on the basis of the evidence provided and the submissions made on behalf of both parties, the infraction as alleged is not proven and that the disciplinary action be at an end.”
