MARTIN KAYMER MOVED serenely to his first US Open title after carding a final round 69 and winning by eight strokes from Rickie Fowler and Erik Compton.
The German, playing alongside Fowler, carded two birdies and a bogey, as well as six pars, thus far on a day that is slightly easier for scoring than Saturday’s stringent set-up. He bogeyed 10 before picking up shots on 13 and 14. Another bogey followed on 16 but he closed out with pars to seal his second Major.
Compton was at -4 for the early part of the final round but fell away on the back nine. Fowler dropped two shots after nine holes to fall back to -1. A double bogey six on the fourth all but ended his challenge with Kaymer taking time out to offer him words of encouragement.
Round of the day so far was from America’s Daniel Berger [66]. He climbed to +7 after that round, a score that Graeme McDowell [70] also finished on. Rory McIlroy shot at 73 to finish on +6.
