Quigley claims Player of the Year prize

Bit O’Red striker Mark Quigley was named PFAI Player of the Year in Dublin last night.

SLIGO ROVERS CROWNED a historic season last night as striker Mark Quigley was named PFAI Player of the Year 2012.

Quigley picked up the top prize at the Association’s annual ceremony in the Burlington Hotel, beating Bit O’Red team-mate Jason McGuinness to the award.

Sean O’Connor of St Patrick’s Athletic and Ronan Finn of Shamrock Rovers were the other nominees for Player of the Year, won in 2011 by former Derry City striker Eamon Zayed.

The gong crowns an unforgettable campaign in which Quigley, 27, picked up his first league winner’s medal. The Dubliner, who moved west from Dundalk during the off-season, scored 10 goals to help propel Sligo to the title after 35 years in the domestic wilderness.

St Pat’s starlet Chris Forrester was named Young Player of the Year while Limerick FC’s Rory Gaffney took home the award for First Division Player of the Year.

Former Derry City ace James McClean was named Overseas Player of the Year in recognition of his meteoric rise since sealing a switch to Sunderland.

Neil Doyle was named Referee of the Year and Dr Alan Byrne was presented with the Special Merit Award.
