Mark McHugh is back on the Donegal panel

Rory Gallagher has named the All-Ireland winner in his experimental squad.

MARK MCHUGH has been named in new Donegal manager Rory Gallagher’s experimental panel for the Dr McKenna Cup.

McHugh was an All-Star as Jim McGuinness’s team won the All-Ireland championship in 2012 but left the panel last April in the wake of Donegal’s Allianz League Division Two final loss to Monaghan at Croke Park.

The 24-year-old spent the summer with Donegal New York before returning to his native Kilcar in August. Without McHugh, Donegal won a third Ulster championship in four seasons and reached the All-Ireland final, only to lose 2-9 to 0-12 against Kerry.

McHugh will be joined in the panel by his cousin Eoin, whose father James played wing-forward when Donegal lifted the All-Ireland championship for the first time in 1992.

Gallagher succeeded McGuinness in October and has added Clontibret, Co Monaghan, native Eamon Ward, who plays full-back for Glenswilly.

Donegal open their McKenna Cup with a fixture away to Derry in Owenbeg on Sunday, January4, with Gallagher’s native Fermanagh and Queen’s University Belfast also in Section B.

Goalkeeper Mark Anthony McGinley, who played SSE Airtricity League Premier Division football for UCD, has also been given the chance to shine.
