DONEGAL SKIPPER MICHAEL MURPHY insists that “the door is always open” for Mark McHugh.
But if the prodigal All-Star is planning a surprise comeback for the Ulster final, his captain is none the wiser.
McHugh, who caused a stir when he quit inter-county football, is in New York where he has been sanctioned to play for the Donegal club.
Despite rumours of a u-turn ahead of the Ulster SFC final against Monaghan on 20 July, Murphy said that “it’s the same story.”
“The door is always open for Mark. As far as I know, he’s in New York and I suppose that’s the first and last that I’ve heard of it.”
Murphy also paid tribute to Jim McGuinness for the manner in which he has balanced his dual roles with Donegal and Celtic.
New boss Ronny Delia hinted at an increased role for McGuinness in his Parkhead backroom, and Murphy believes that both sides are reaping the benefit of the double-jobbing.
“It’s been fantastic for him and he’s been an absolute credit. His enthusiasm is brilliant and he’s never missed a training session in two years. That’s testament to the man.
Making that initial decision, he had to weigh up all the options. We see the best of him here and I’m sure Celtic see the best of them there.
“I’m sure he’s brought some of their learnings to us. They’re different sports but it’s a team environment and he’s such a great teacher.”
