Todd Marinovich reflects on what could have been

Sports Film Of The Week: The Marinovich Project

One dad’s misguided quest to turn his son into an NFL star QB.

Title: The Marinovich Project

Director: John Dorsey, Andrew Stephan

Release date: 2011

Plot: We all probably remember seeing parents on the sidelines of underage games who were far too critical of their child or who were living their sporting dream through them. Todd Marinovich’s father freely admits that was the case with his son’s career.

Marv Marinovich was a failed NFL player but a fierce gym rat who was determined to make sure his son would succeed where he failed. Marv had his son Todd doing stretches in his cot and put him on a gym programme focused on flexibility as soon as he could walk. His childhood diet was also strictly monitored in the hopes that he could become the next megastar in the NFL. Todd Marinovich was dubbed “Robo QB” by the media but after a stellar high school career, things began to fall apart.

It is worth a watch just to see the single mindedness of Marv Marinovich describe his grand vision. Here is part one:

I have very little interest in American football but have to say I really enjoyed that film. Can’t imagine how much pressure Marinovich must have been under
