SUNDERLAND GOALKEEPER VITO Mannone says the club should reimburse their fans after they suffered their heaviest defeat in 32 years on Saturday.
The club lost 8-0 away to Southampton on Saturday, with boss Gus Poyet branding the defeat his “most embarrassing” moment in football.
And following this ignominious outcome, of the 2,500 Black Cats fans who travelled to watch the game, Mannone told reporters: “I really mean that we should pay their tickets and travel.
“We should do it because we didn’t put a foot in, we didn’t work hard. We started the game well but after we conceded we threw in the towel and I include myself.
“It is difficult for us but it’s very difficult for them as well. It is a difficult moment.”
Should Mannone’s wishes be fulfilled, it would not be the first time that a team has paid back fans.
Following Wigan’s 9-1 away defeat to Tottenham in 2009, the club agreed to refund travelling supporters’ tickets.
