THE DAUGHTER OF Nelson Mandela has been ordered to pay $7.5m (€5.7m) to a Los Angeles boxing promoter in a bizarre story surrounding plans to get Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao in the ring together.
Zindziswa Mandela was sued by Duane Moody back in April after he claimed that the 52-year-old owed him several million dollars.
She had attempted to arrange the sport’s most highly-anticipated bout, which was to be to staged in South Africa to celebrate her father’s 93rd birthday, and promised Moody 15% of all the proceeds in exchange for his services.
However, Mandela never followed through on organising the event and the pair have yet to fight.
And according to American celebrity gossip wesbsite TMZ, she chose to ignore Moody’s complaint, meaning a judge in LA entered a default judgement.
TMZ, who claim to have obtained legal documents from the case, added that she must now cough up the seven figure sum as damages plus legal costs.
We haven’t heard anything from any representative for Ms Mandela. It appears she feels hiding in South Africa means she can avoid her obligations in the US,” said a spokesperson from Duane’s legal team.
It is believed that she plans to challenge the judgement, however.
Mayweather, meanwhile, will start his 90-day jail sentence in Las Vegas on Friday after pleading guilty to a domestic violence charge.
