MANCHESTER UNITED MANAGER Alex Ferguson has revealed that discussions are underway to extend Nani’s stay at Old Trafford.

The 26-year-old, who has 18 months left to run on his current deal, has struggled to assert himself in the first team this season after a number of niggling injuries but his boss is keen for him to remain at the club for the foreseeable.

“We want to keep him, there’s no doubt about that,” Ferguson told the club’s official website. “He’s capable of scoring incredible goals.

“His goal against Everton, when he dinked the keeper after playing a couple of one-twos, was incredible. And the goal against Tottenham the year before, where he dinked the goalkeeper after playing a one-two, was another one.

“The boy has an incredible talent for winning matches. He’s one of the best match-winners in the game, and I include the whole of Europe in that.

“David Gill’s been speaking to his agent for quite a few weeks. It’s entirely up to the boy — he has a year and a half left. I think he wants guaranteed first-team football. He can guarantee himself that. Performances like the other night can guarantee that. We’re trying our best to keep him because he’s such a match-winner.”

A hamstring injury has kept Nani out for six weeks, but he returned recently despite failing to make the matchday squad to face Real Madrid in the Champions League last-16 first leg. However, Fergie is happy with the selection headache the Portuguese’s return gives him.

Ferguson added: “Nani was out with an injury for six weeks or more. We sent him back to Portugal for treatment and tried to get the injury to settle. He’s never really had an injury.

“Now he’s back fit, training well, he’s a consideration. There’s no doubt about that. It gives me a headache because Antonio Valencia has been a fantastic player for us and I know Nani likes playing on the right.

“We like to play Nani on the left sometimes. We also have Ashley Young who can play on the left and we have Ryan Giggs who can play there if we want him to play in a different way. Our options are fantastic. I think that puts us in a strong position.”

  • I would say Ferguson will hang on to him for one more season and see how Zaha develops next season. Agree with the comment above in rating him higher than Young. He is still regarded as a massive talent on the continent. It only in England he is not rated as high.

  • An often used cliche but Nani seems to shine most when United are on the front foot/winning the game. He seems to be anonymous when things aren’t going there way. He definitely got the talent but lacks the application to apply it properly. Although I also remember once saying this about Ronaldo…..

  • Hard to know wats happening in d background with training and d likes barry. He was our key player for alot of last year. The injury didnt help his chances either.

  • Nani is frustrating because of his decision making. Sometimes he makes great incisive bursts into the last third, but then stalls, doing these little jigs and dances over the ball instead of passing it off. All this stalling loses the momentum of the attack, and gives the opposition ample time to get men back, thus the impetus is lost. Then, because United have committed men forward to support him, they are open to counter attack if possession is lost.
If he could incorporate (into his game) the instinct of knowing when to release the ball in the last third, then his consistency would improve, and a good player would become a great player! Thats why he is overlooked for selection against the better teams, because his decision making compromises United’s possession, when they are most vulnerable i.e.- when they have committed men forward to support.

  • According to Opta, no player has more assists in the premier league since 2009 than Nani. I was shocked at that! I thought Man Utd didn’t have any good players!

    • Most of nani’s assists are from rubbish shots and crosses that just deflect off defenders. Sell him fast. He has his moments but the majority of the time he is just the most frustrating guy to watch. Won’t pass when it’s on and then tries some ridiculas trick that rarely works and rolls around the ground crying

    • @Patrick “assists are from rubbish shots ” an assit is an assit , you have to get into the position to ge the shot off , it lead to a goal , that wins games end of !

    • I remember there was a streak of 19/20 games where Nani either scored or assisted in. That was the season before last and included Portugal games, but that is a great record either way!

    • Fair point tensing. He can do some great things at times. Still really frustrating to watch him generally. He was very good against reading. If he could just keep consistency to his game.
