Manchester United 2-0 Crystal Palace

Good afternoon and welcome along. After the disappointment of Ireland’s defeats to Sweden and Austria during the international break, we can happily turn our attention back to the Premier League.

First up is Manchester United’s meeting with Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. The Red Devils went down to Liverpool last time out and sit five points off the top of the league on four points.

Newly-promoted Palace, meanwhile, were beaten in their opening two fixtures since returning to the top flight but had an excellent 3-1 win over Sunderland a fortnight ago.

The teams are in and big news is that Wayne Rooney is back after missing England’s World Cup qualifiers through a head injury. New signing Marouane Fellaini has to settle for a place on the bench, however.

Manchester United: De Gea, Fabio, Ferdinand, Vidic, Evra, Carrick, Anderson, Valencia, Rooney, Young, van Persie. Subs: Evans, Hernandez, Cleverley, Zaha, Fellaini, Amos, Januzaj.

Crystal Palace: Speroni, Mariappa, Gabbidon, Delaney, Moxey, Dikgacoi, Jedinak, Campana, Puncheon, Chamakh, Gayle. Subs: Phillips, O’Keefe, Kebe, Alexander, Jerome, Bannan, Guedioura.

While Dublin midfielder Owen Garvan has been left out of the Palace squad after Eagles boss Ian Holloway claimed he had shown a bad attitude, Cork native and Ireland international Damien Delaney does get the nod in defence.

They’re discussing Wayne Rooney on BT Sport and, when the topic of his recent injury comes up, Neil Warnock reveals that he “loves a good scar”.

Palace boss Ian Holloway, who is banned from the touchline today: “They’re just another team. Last year they were champions, this year they’re not so they’ve got to earn that right.

“It’s a great test for us and I’m excited about it. Hopefully the supporters will see why I’m so proud of this group.”

Here’s that headband we told you about…

United attack straight from kick-off with Fabio down the right but Van Persie is dispossessed and Palace clear the danger. Sun is shining in Old Trafford this afternoon.

Rooney lays off to Carrick and the midfielder decides to let fly from 25 yard. The flight of the ball shifts on its way to goal and Julian Speroni has to bat away.

Nice build-up play from United and when Evra plays a neat one-two with Van Persie, he goes down inside the box. Referee Jon Moss is having none of it and waves play on.

Delaney concedes a free-kick to Rooney in a dangerous position and Van Persie takes the set-piece, which is headed behind for a corner but the linesman’s flag is raised anyway.

Still no real chances of note to report.

Ashley Young skips past Kiagisho Dikagacoi and hits the floor. There is contact from the Palace player but Moss issues a yellow card to the United winger.

The replay shows it’s a good call as Young went by his opponent before kicking his standing leg and going down.

Rooney shoots from distance and, although it’s struck well, he doesn’t trouble Speroni. The same player then breaks with RVP and Anderson abut the Brazilian is crowded out after a poor first touch.

Palace’s defence have been resolute in the opening half hour.

Best chance of the game. Young plays Evra down the left flank and the full-back drills a cross towards the front post. Van Persie adds on with a flick and is narrowly wide of the target.

MY WORD! Rooney and Van Persie attempt to recreate the volley the latter scored against Aston Villa at the end of last season and are inches away from pulling it off.

Rooney clips a pass to the Dutchman, who takes it on his chest and crashes a strike off the crossbar with a right-footed volley.

Down the other end, United are caught napping. Rio Ferdinand allows Dwight Gayle to take down a long ball and the former Peterborough man tries a little chip past David De Gea after getting inside his man. It’s just wide of the mark though. Big chance.

PENALTY TO MANCHESTER UNITED…

GOAL! Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace (Robin van Persie)

Young takes a tumble under a challenge from Dikagacoi but, unlike the earlier incident, Jon Moss this time has a quick chat with his assistant before pointing to the spot. It’s far from clear-cut but United have a penalty and Van Persie slots past Speroni.

South African international Dikagacoi is also shown a straight red card meaning Palace will play 45 minutes with 10 men.

Half-time: Manchester United 1-0 Crystal Palace

Watching slow-motion replay, it seems that the contact was made OUTSIDE the box meaning if anything it should have been a free-kick.

The second half has just kicked off. Not changes on either side.

Ashley Young sent through on goal from a defence-splitting pass from Anderson. He strikes straight at Speroni, however.

Ashley Young involved again. Cuts in onto his right foot and drives a shot which bounces a couple of yards outside the post.

Marouane Fellaini is warming up alongside compatriot Adnan Januzaj, meanwhile. Surely he will make his debut in the next half hour or so.

Another Marouane, Chamakh, has been cautioned over a late challenge on Nemanja Vidic.

Algerian international Adlen Guedioura is on for Jose Campana as Palace look to add some steel to their depleted team.

Superb work from Evra in an advanced position results in Van Persie skying a shot way over.

Here comes Fellaini. He’s on for his club debut with Anderson making way.

Palace have also introduced Cameron Jerome for Dwight Gayle.

Another substitution – Januzaj, seen as a huge prospect by United, is on for Young.

Then Fellaini nearly caps his debut with a goal. The midfielder controls the ball with his chest and volleys at goal, with Speroni getting in a block.

Carrick threads a pass into Rooney, who has two attempts at goal but is unsuccessful on both occasions.

David Moyes makes his third and final substitution by withdrawing Van Persie for Javier Hernandez.

GOAL! Manchester United 2-0 Crystal Palace (Wayne Rooney)

Januzaj, who has looked brilliant during this cameo, wins a free-kick and Rooney curls it over the wall and into the bottom corner.

With two team-mates inside, Rooney attempts a scoop to the back post but gets it all wrong. United enjoying the extra man now with Palace out on their feet.

Full-time: Manchester United 2-0 Crystal Palace

Crystal Palace will feel hard done by after the penalty decision and resulting sending off but David Moyes has at last recorded his first win at Old Trafford.

It wasn’t vintage from United but they’ve got back on track and have now got seven points from their first four Premier League games.

Fellaini made his bow while Adnan Januzaj is definitely one to look out for this season.

That’s my lot, we’ll have coverage of all of the other Premier League games today so stick around.

Thanks, as always, for the company!
