FOOTBALL COACHES LOVE to talk about balance. After a defeat, many will bemoan the lack of it in their side, while victories will often be attributed to an equilibrium that made the winning side difficult to exploit.
Nothing pleases a boss more than a perfect marriage between defence and attack, left and right.
Yet Manchester Unitedโs summer transfer campaign largely flew in the face of such a philosophy. Far from creating a balanced squad, Louis van Gaal and Ed Woodward have thrown caution to the wind and built an attack-heavy staff with little in the way of defensive cover.
โWhen a player of this calibre becomes available, it is an opportunity not to be missed,โ Van Gaal said following the capture of Radamel Falcao on a โฌ440,000 a-week loan deal after the deadline had passed on Monday. But United could have done so much more with the โฌ30 million it has cost to take on the Monaco striker until the end of the season.
While their forward line now has a formidable look about it, opposition strikers will be licking their lips at the prospect of their side counter-attacking at the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans, who now form the crux of their defensive set-up.
Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie, Juan Mata and record โฌ75m signing Angel Di Maria undoubtedly provide a sharper edge in attack than United could offer last season, but at what cost?
Marcos Rojo has been added to the defensive line, but remains a player who the clubโs extensive Portuguese scouting network had largely ignored until he produced a handful of positive displays for Argentina at the World Cup as a left-back. And, as a result, they ended up spending twice as much as they might have done had they plucked him from Sporting Lisbon before he headed to the finals in Brazil.
Daley Blindโs arrival from Ajax has been hailed as a great move by many in Manchester, but even he is more likely to occupy a midfield role rather than a defensive one, given his greater qualities in the centre of the park.
Some thought was clearly given to the problems at the back, with Thomas Vermaelen a key target for Van Gaal. But once Barcelona beat them to the punch for the Arsenal man, little consideration was given to bringing in one of the top quality defenders on the market.
Bayern Munich snapped up Mehdi Benatia from Roma, with United making no move for a man who was begging them to sign him over a year ago, while Liverpool snapped up Dejan Lovren and Ezequiel Garay cost Zenit St Petersburg only โฌ6m. Top defenders were there to be bought, some at bargain prices, but the Old Trafford decision-makers refused to show their hand.
All of which leaves Rojo, Smalling, Jones and Evans as their four main candidates for the three centre-half positions. Even if Van Gaal eventually switches back to a four-man back line that he has been infinitely more at home with over his coaching career, that far from solves his issues. It is a far cry from the Manchester United side of Alex Ferguson, which had leaders such as Nemanja Vidic, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra within its defensive ranks.
Solid foundations
Going back even further, dominant leadership from the back line was key to all incarnations of Fergusonโs brilliant reign. While many observers pointed to their great midfields as the basis for their success, huge characters like Steve Bruce, Gary Pallister, Jaap Stam, Ferdinand, Denis Irwin and Gary Neville laid much of the foundation from which United thrived. Evans et al, try as they might, will never be cut from the same cloth.
This is not the first time Van Gaal has overloaded his attack, with his great Ajax side of the 1990s having a similar modus operandi. But that Champions League-winning outfit was crafted superbly, and not thrown together as is the case with United 2014.
The triumphant Godenzonen side included seven starters who had begun their career at the club, learning their trade, being guided in the โTotal Footballโ craft that was Ajaxโs trademark. Over time, Danny Blind, Edgar Davids, Jari Litmanen and Finidi George were added to the ranks to round out a team of tremendous attacking potential.
It was not a knee-jerk reaction to failure, rather a long-term vision being realised. And the current United squad looks a lot like the former rather than the more desirable latter.
Given the talent now available to Van Gaal, it shouldnโt be beyond the Dutchman to return the 20-time kings of England to the Champions League for next season. But is that enough, given the costs incurred?
For around โฌ200m, they have recruited a host of big names but have seemingly overlooked their main issues. Faced with a hole in the roof, they have laid a brand new lawn. The club can afford the outlay involved thanks to their huge new sponsorship deals with Chevrolet and Adidas, but that doesnโt mean they canโt get value for money.
With so much money having been spent this summer, United should be gunning for the Premier League title again. But one look at their defensive stocks suggests theyโre just as close to another spectacular failure as they are to a 21st coronation.

I blame the Glazers. Only five players brought in, barely any money spent.
Blame the glaziers? United have spent โฌ200m according to the article. Apparently the most spent during any transfer window by a club. So how can it be the glaziers fault?
Theyโve pulled close to ยฃ1billion of the clubs money out and into their own pockets. Itโs a fallacy that they spent โฌ200m. They just took the shackles off and allowed the club to spend itsโ own money. They never have and never will put a red cent of their own in. The average net spend up until this year was ยฃ17m a year under their watch.
Conor and his like baffle normal Man United fans. Trust me!
@Conor. Why should the Glazers spent their own money buying football players and paying their salaries?
I didnโt say they should? Was just pointing out that itโs the first time theyโve really let the club dip into itโs own reserves in a big way!
@John. Normal fans? What are you rambling about?
And they need to spend another 200m. All these players should have been brought in a year ago. The like of rio were no longer up to it, so had been done needed to be done. And the youth players brought through in recent yrs are not good enough for where united want to be.
440,000 euro a week is bizarre
Do you believe everything you read?
Falcao is getting 275,000 a week.
@john. 440,00 before tax and 275,000 after tax
No, paperboy; Itโs 275,000 BEFORE tax.
http://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/397594/REVEALED-The-price-Manchester-United-will-pay-for-new-signing-Radamel-Falcao
Read this please and come back
If itโs in the Daily Star it must be true!
Well Iโd listen to the daily star before Iโd listen to John! Have you seen his comments tonight? He has to be on the drinkโฆ
And itโs not only the daily star reporting that! Most of the news sources have nearly the same estimateโฆ.
The sponsorship deal with united only stays at that level if they get back into the champions league if not it falls to 230 odd million .
There is a reason falcao wasnโt snapped up by anybody else his rediculous wages wait for another exit strategy by MR Rooney to get more after seeing all this go on.
In the end this will not be sustainable because players will see what is being forked out for one player on loan and will want a slice of the pie trouble ahead for utd with wages and the like
The 750m deal would addidas kicks in from next season so this season has no bearing on the deal and even at that the first 2 years are to be paid in full itโs only if they fail to qualify for the champions league 2 years in a row while under contract that it would affect the deal
I donโt think wages would have been a barrier for Real Madrid, and Falcao wanted to sign for them, so there may be a question about his fitness. He has been out with a knee injury for nine months. He may find adjusting to the pace of Premier League football a struggle.
It doesnโt drop to ยฃ230m. It drops to 75% of original deal. Where do people get these figures from?
Whilst the defense is not as strong as it should be they will be ok. Raphael, Evans, Rojo, Shaw, Jones, Smalling, blind (if needed) will see utd through to January when they will surely try and recruit another top quality player but this time focusing on the back line. As for the attacking side of things they are as strong as any team in the premiership and most of these people writing articles like this and talking about holes in the defense are those who are raging their teams didnโt sign players like utd have in this transfer window. Great business by utd, they will make that money back and in any case they have the finances to absorb their spending.
Well said Glenn. We couldโve signed Hummels Gary Coleman Baines Vermalen Benita by now but thatโs not the way Van Gaa does business. By attackerโs first and pay them whatever they want is the best policy to win the champions league. The defense we have is world class anyway. Raphael is telling best full back on the planet, Evans and Jones are unstoppable in the centre. Weโre the best team in the world right now and we will win the triple This season.
@DublinRed. I canโt believe you actually take the time out of your day to come up with this bullsh*t!! Sad man with nothing else to do your life must be depressingโฆ
Paperboy, chill out. There is a spoon or two of sarcasm in his comment!!
@daithi. Do you see all his comments?
Whatโs sad is the fact that heโs not even a UTD fan , just a sad little troll who think heโs funny
Hehe, the truth and you get hammered with red thumbsโฆ.
Itโs gas Graham!!
Can someone explain how falcao is world class hulk thrived at Porto as did Diego Forlan at athletico so where is this world classness coming from ?
Have you not seen him play for Atletico Madrid and Colombia?
Yes I have Iโm just asking you how is he world class when countless strikers have done it at that level ?
The United squad is far from lopsided or unbalanced!
Van Gaal will switch to 4-3-3 which he has ALWAYS played at club level (he practically admitted this even in pre-season that this is the formation he will aim for).
The squad is far from lopsided, it is perfectly balanced. Look at thisโฆlook at the amount of options there are in each and every position. How can anyone with a sound mind think this squad is imbalanced? There are loads of options for every position in this formationโฆloads of options.
Best X1 in bold and under them, each and every other option for this position. Amazing squad โ amazing balance.

It will make for some high scoring attacking games anyway
Van gaal, woodward and the glazers have fooled Utd fans. Utdโs attack has improved alot, but it was already your strongest area. A good manager would have said f*ck it, if weโre gonna spend, itโs gonna be on our weakpoints i.e. Defence and central midfield. Yes Blind will improve midfield, but thereโs still no physicality in there, no strong presence. Rojo is a decent addition but my god did you need a CB, at least one. Judging by the amount of CBโs sold this summer, Utd shouldโve went for one. Utd now have a Galacticos attack and a Renford Rejects defence.
Another United article โฆ.It would be worse if they didnโt sign anyoneโฆ.
somebody has taken the brake off the utd rollercoaster.. its going to be one heck of a ride.. lets see what happens next
How can anyone who writes about football for a living think that this squad is imbalanced? I can understand idiots in my local pub thinking it, but not an unbiased football writer. Look at this squad, the options in EVERY position are to be envied. First X1 in CAPS, all other options for that position in itals under it. Amazing squad, amazing balance.

You do realise cleverly and Powell are both gone on loan ?
I took it from a football forum before they went on loan. It is missing Ashley Young, but still offers up great balance. There is no doubt about that. Perfect balance in that squad. United spent 150million on midfield and defence this summer and writers are saying they didnโt sign enough in that area? I guess anyone can be a football journalist these days. Shocking.
Iโm sorry but I canโt agree with valencia at right back but I agree he will play 4 at the back
You phuckin noddy. What you wasting all that space with those dots and crAp for? Are you 12? Utd are going to be more of a car crash this season
Sorry John but, as a United fan I have to say that your comments are so off the wall that I actually cringed when reading them. Perfectly balanced squad? Are you for real? Apart from listing Powell & Cleverley who have left (Powell was announced last night over 28 hours ago) you have listed players such as Fellaini & Carrick who are unlikely to get a look in under LVG as well as an untried and untested teenager like James Wilson as a striker option. Iโm surprised you havenโt mentioned Anderson who is still lurking about after somehow escaping the cull. Itโs obvious that the team is unbalanced as there are too many attacking players to the extent that you will probably find that ยฃ42 million January signing Juan Mata will be confined to the bench and will be on his bike next summer.
So many inaccuracies in that article, I am amazed it went to press.
