STEVEN GERRARD SCORED two penalties as Liverpool closed to within four points of Premier League leaders Chelsea with a 3-0 win at beleaguered rivals Manchester United on Sunday.
Gerrard found the net from 12 yards either side of half-time before Luis Suarez added a third goal in the 84th minute to give Liverpool their first victory at Old Trafford in five years.
Gerrard should have had a hat-trick of spot-kicks, with a third penalty hitting the post after United captain Nemanja Vidic had been shown a second yellow card for felling Daniel Sturridge, but it was to prove anecdotal.
Liverpool retain a game in hand on Chelsea, who lost 1-0 at Aston Villa on Saturday, and while Brendan Rodgers’s side look more like potential champions with each display, United’s season continues to unravel.
This was the defending champions’ fifth home defeat of the campaign and having started the day 11 points below the Champions League places, their hopes of a top-four finish have been all but extinguished.
As a result, Wednesday’s Champions League home game with Olympiakos now takes on crucial significance, but with United 2-0 down from the first leg of the last 16 tie, there could be more misery around the corner.
United manager David Moyes had admitted prior to the game that Liverpool’s form “probably” made them favourites, but he will have been alarmed by the ease with which the visitors found holes in the hosts’ defence.

There were fewer than three minutes on the clock when a Jordan Henderson pass down the inside-right channel set Sturridge free, but he shot wide with his weaker right foot.
There was plenty of commitment to United’s play, with Phil Jones and Robin van Persie both flying into early challenges, but they had not mustered a shot worthy of the name by the time Liverpool went ahead in the 34th minute.
- Gerrard silences United catcalls
As Suarez looked to dink the ball past Rafael da Silva on the left-hand side of the area, the Brazilian jutted out a hand and referee Mark Clattenburg immediately awarded a penalty.
Having been booked for clattering Gerrard moments earlier, Rafael was fortunate to avoid a second yellow card, but the Liverpool captain showed no mercy from the spot to silence the catcalls from the Stretford End.
Liverpool’s fans at the opposite end of the ground celebrated deliriously, and although United briefly rallied, with Wayne Rooney stinging Simon Mignolet’s palms, there was more of the same to come.
Only 25 seconds of the second half had elapsed when Jones barged into Joe Allen after he had chested down a lofted pass from Jordan Henderson and Gerrard’s spot-kick, into the bottom-right corner, was again unerring.
Rooney then had a penalty claim of his own turned down, after a collision with Martin Skrtel on the edge of the Liverpool box, and when a rare chance fell to Marouane Fellaini, he blazed over.
After Van Persie had headed wide from a Rooney cross, Gerrard was handed an opportunity to complete a first ever hat-trick against United when Vidic sent Sturridge sprawling.
This time, however, his aim was slightly off, with the ball cannoning against the base of the left-hand post and away.
Liverpool were not finished though. Moments after being thwarted by a stunning save from David de Gea, Suarez ghosted in behind the hosts’ flatfooted defence to roll home and make United’s misery complete.
Mmmmmmm, when did the fun go outta sport, last time I checked, suppose to be fun, if not, wats d point? Regardless of code/country/club, whether u win or lose or draw, still have to get up, go to work, make a bob, and they don’t give a shite how one u give it to them so folks, it is sport, suppose to be fun, let’s have fun even at each other but don’t take it too serious
I told ya I be back on here when we lose you no nothing about football one bad season and you think utd are finished let’s be honest here Liverpool couldn’t beat man city or Chelsea in d league so far this season false hope can’t wait for d old egg on d face bud
@united that’s how it starts.when united don’t qualify for Europe next year.what world class player will want to go to an aged team with a bad manager?where will the glaziers get the money to buy new players and pay off their massive debt without the money from champions league football?its just the start of a slippery slope.@jimmy you’re right the hardcore united supporters have gone to ground again.but hey that’s united supporters only willing to support their club in the good times
From utd fan, congrats to Liverpool, defo deserved victory & probably shoulda won by more!
It’s gone to real embarrassing stuff from utd, there offering absolutely nothing positive, from body language they seem have no passion or care at all, like bunch overpaid kids!!
Strange to see many Man U fans come together and see things for what it is…. Was hard for me watching Souness do it to Liverpool…. All great things come to an end. More than anything, time for the Man U board to step up.
Dominant performance.. Starting Allen in the narrow diamond was completely justified. Liverpool looked very solid for the second game in a row.. It’s cliche but, remaining games are cup finals for Liverpool if they are going to go on and win it, here’s hoping!
For the first time in 24 years I’m dreaming that Liverpool could actually do it. It’s been a brilliant title race this year, and while you would still make Chelsea favourites, they have to go to Anfield for the third last fixture of this year’s title race.
Sometimes its hard to do the easy thing. Fergie took over Man U, they were a big club, average team…. Moyes took over champions…..do you let him dismantle everything or admit mistake?
That’s the 6 million Euro question. But there was a serious lack of passion displayed by the players today. Where are the team leaders? With the exception of Rooney none of them are stepping up. We sadly miss a Roy Keane type player now. Clean house this summer.
If Liverpool want to be a big club again they need to put trophies in the cabinet . They dominated midfield to day ( no surprise ) but all and all they did offer to much up front with only one goal from open play. Today’s win means nothing if you can’t win the league.
I think they have a few trophies in the cabinet already. Liverpools brief wasn’t to win the lge it was to qualify for the chmp lge which they are on course to do
Means nothing if they don’t win the league ? Sorry but a ridiculous statement to make. In order to become a ‘big’ club again as you say, the 1st thing to do is make positive improvements, Rodgers is doing that in abundance. Liverpool are still outsiders for the title, fact. If they continue to improve then they will win the title in the next few years. Does your statement mean if Moyes doesn’t win the title next year then Utd are no longer a ‘big’ club ? Of course trophies are the ultimate goal but you have to work towards that. Baby steps. Moyes will learn this too !
Utd and Liverpool are both big clubs. And we both have the trophies as well. Liverpool are moving in the right direction, we are not! What is important is for us to right the ship and not worry about others. The problem today was not that Liverpool were so good, but rather in how bad we were. Is that Moyes’s fault, or is it the players and or mgt. fault. in truth it’s all three. It’s painful this year but we don’t have God given right to be the best, we have to earn it. These are the days that will test the mettle of true Red Devil fans. It is up to us to support our team…win, lose or draw!
Meant that at Collins above… Good comment from Gerard… also, Liverpool have belief, Man U seem to have despair right now…. look at Rooney’s comments lately, they are hurting….
It means we beat the league champions 3 nil at old Trafford. What Liverpools plan was to achieve champions league this season, nothing more, nothing less. There we’ll on the way of doing that. Ynwa: )
Iiverpool win 4-1 at OT 4 years ago against a far superior UTD side with Ronaldo and Rooney at the prime of there partnership . where was the progress then ??? All Liverpool have done is beaten a poor team with no confidence which won’t change either of there seasons .
Apart from people like Collins and the Liverpool versions of Collins its eery to see what looks like and understanding between decent United fans and us decent Liverpool fans. What we have in both these clubs is success thats built primarily on the fans. It’s the likes of us that put our money into these clubs via going to matches and merchandise. Tis easy buy a club with billions in your account and make them successful in an hour. But at United and Liverpool you have clubs who do it right and by the book and yes both clubs will have crests and troughs the one thing is they’ll be known for who they are and not what they are. I was delighted to beat United today but it just felt a tad hollow as the United team are a disgrace to their club and manager. Moyes isn’t the answer but if he’s given time I hope he repays the owners with a team who can challenge. As for BR my jury was out last season but this year he’s made us a brilliant team to watch. Sort the defence get a few quality signings and who knows. Hell May might even bring out rewards earlier than we thought. C’mon the ‘Pool.
Straight from the church of real fans…. To me, rather see footballing teams like both reds duke it out rather than rich owners with clubs that have no real base…. They would sink into obscurity with there owners….
Even worse comment ! That’s exactly the point, Liverpool beat Utd back then & made absolutely no progress. That’s where the change is now, Liverpool hammer you today & go 2nd in the table with CL football secured & an outside chance at the title. That’s called progress & only in Rodgers 2nd season.
Moyes took over an slightly ageing team who over-proformed for SAF in the last couple of years. He needs a major clearcut and rebuild. He needs a lot of time and patience. From a Liverpool fan.
Agree with that, silly to get rid of that experience… especially in his first season… players won titles with those coaches & would have great trust in their methods even if results were going against them..
United fan of over 40 year here, we are absolutely dire at the moment, beaten by a better team today but there was no fight , no spark from United, better Pool teams have come to OT and been well beaten .Moyes had been a disaster pus selection for manager, just not up to it. Having said that players who are being paid a fortune are not doing the buiz either.
Good luck to Pool would sooner see a proper football club win than Chavski or Citeh moneybags .
Look we all know this season for utd is gone,so hopefully clear out in summer buy new players & see if we move in right direction,so end of next season then judge moyes, always gonna be tough replacing Fergie, but what worries me about moyes is tactically he seems very poor, but we have give him until end next season to see if any progress has been made!!
Sorry Colm but I don’t agree. I have backed Moyes up until recently but I have to say he is very tactically naive. Gary Nevilled called it in commentary what Uniteds problem was even before the first goal but Moyes couldn’t see it and waited until after 70 mins when damage was well done before making changes. I think he really needs to get good results in the next 2 games against olympiakos and city or he could get the boot !!
Big Liverpool fan but I honestly thought Utd would get a point yesterday because, on paper, they had a very strong team. Then heard the 2 interviews before the match, 1 with Gerrard, 1 with Fellaini and changed my mind. Gerrard was full of confidence, Fellaini was hopeful at best. Delighted with the result but feel sorry for Moyes – the players are spoilt millionaires, using the new manager as a scapegoat for their poor performances.
As a United fan it’s hard to believe how far we’ve fallen in such a short space of time from winning the league comfortably last season to what looks like 6th or 7th place this season. I don’t buy into the theory that Moyes is going through the same troubles Fergie had when he took over. Moyes took over a championship winning team, Fergie took over a mess. There’s clearly something amiss but Moyes should be given another season to prove he’s up to it but if we don’t make the Champions League next season we should go after Klopp!
I think they went after Moyes rather than a big name ego, Mou for example…. I had would have preferred a big name over Rodgers, but would he be doing better? Thats the beauty of football…..

Irony is united could do Liverpool a big favor by defeating city next weekend….and Kompany is suspended..
Are you actually implying that Man United are capable of beating Man City at this moment in time?
We seen villa beat Chelsea last night:)
City will do us big time. Its a dead season as far as utd are concerned.
….and so is Vidic. Can you imagine a central defensive pairing of jones & smalling up against the City strikers?
Unbelieveable Jeff !!!!
It’s great watching the end of an era.uniteds term as a top flight club is over
Has anyone heard from leslie today?
I told ya I be back on here when we lose you no nothing about football one bad season and you think utd are finished let’s be honest here Liverpool couldn’t beat man city or Chelsea in d league so far this season false hope can’t wait for d old egg on d face bud

6 million euro would probably but the united team
Spurs fan myself – but used to live near Liverpool – think most neutrals want them to win the title
Annihilated again but not surprised. United are just brain dead in the final third, no urgency, no penetration, no wit.
If Liverpool want to be a big club again they need to put trophies in the cabinet . They dominated midfield to day ( no surprise ) but all and all they did offer to much up front with only one goal from open play. Today’s win means nothing if you can’t win the league.
It means progress.
No win is meaningless.
This makes me laugh…
At the end of the season we take away the goals scored by the champions and see if they still win the league…
Goals from open play… Lfc 1 mufc 0
Points lfc 3 mufc 0
I think they have a few trophies in the cabinet already. Liverpools brief wasn’t to win the lge it was to qualify for the chmp lge which they are on course to do

Where are all the InMoyesWeTrust gang gone too. Idiots they are
Bitterness is catching
Probably still knocking back the beers in joy….
Moyes took over an slightly ageing team who over-proformed for SAF in the last couple of years. He needs a major clearcut and rebuild. He needs a lot of time and patience. From a Liverpool fan.
His biggest mistake was replacing the premiership winning backroom stuff with is average Everton staff.

Gary Nevilled called it in commentary what Uniteds problem was even before the first goal but Moyes couldn’t see it and waited until after 70 mins when damage was well done before making changes. I think he really needs to get good results in the next 2 games against olympiakos and city or he could get the boot !!
Great result :)
Disunited.
Moyes analogy no. 239 I know but he looks like a street busker hired to play a grand piano, clueless.
Where’s Karol Doran?
Playing football manager, with save game editor…. Only place for me where Liverpool have been dominant over the years…. No need for it now…. :)
…it was to prove anecdotal… academic is the correct cliche surely?
The saddest thing for me was watching some Utd fans leaving 6 minutes before the end of the game to get a few prawn sandwiches.
Liverpool need a re -developed 60,000 seat Anfield like Man United need a new manager ASAP.
I used to have wallpaper like the Liverpool top… This was in the early 80s
