Man arrested over 'racist' gesture at Chelsea game

An image appeared to show a fan making a monkey gesture at striker Danny Welbeck last week.

BRITISH POLICE INVETIGATING an alleged racist gesture by a Chelsea supporter towards a black Manchester United player arrested a 28-year-old man today, Scotland Yard said.

Several British newspapers last week printed a picture taken during Chelsea’s dramatic 5-4 League Cup win over Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday which appeared to show a fan making a monkey gesture at striker Danny Welbeck.

“Officers investigating a complaint regarding alleged racist behaviour at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, 31 October have arrested a man,” London’s Metropolitan Police said in a statement. ”The 28-year-old man was arrested… after attending a west London police station by appointment.

“He was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated Section 4A Public Order Act offence and currently remains in custody at the west London police station.”

Enquiries are continuing, it said. Chelsea said last Thursday that they were holding their own separate investigation into the incident and appealed for anyone who could identify the fan to contact the club.

The incident comes after Chelsea confirmed they had complained to the Football Association about “inappropriate language” used by referee Mark Clattenburg towards midfielder Jon Obi Mikel during an English Premier League defeat by Manchester United on October 28.

No but neither is it acceptable for police resources being wasted over a silly gesture…

Its not a silly gesture. It sums up the sick attitude a small numbers of fans and players have. Racism needs to get the boot it is putting massive shame on the game. We don’t have to look far to see it, take a look at the banana incident in Thomond Park at the Limerick v Man City game.

It’s against the law, if it teaches this clown and possibly others, a lesson then it’s not a waste of resources.

Not really a waste, while Welbeck is probably well used to putting up with this and probably didn’t even see it, having the Police investigate the matter shows that racism is never acceptable.

nothing got to do with me being sensitive.they dont bother me in the slightest but theres a big media movement to stamp out racism from sport.im just making a statement that it seems like a bit its a bit of a futile effort to target lads in the crowd when sports personalities on tv are doing pretty much the same thing.

Waste of police time, there’ll always be bigotory unfortunately! Will they go after homophopic and sexist fans equally? A small percent of people are idiots , some people are intolerant but thankfully most people are not. There was 50,000 plus fans present so you’re bound to get one!, are they going to install sensitive microphones in case a fan utters something “forbidden” under his breath?
