LUIS GARCIA, THE player who struck the crucial goal for Liverpool in the 2005 Champions League semi-final against Chelsea, has announced his retirement from football today.
The Spaniard made the announcement on his official website. Garcia’s career saw him play for Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, as well as winning 18 caps with Spain.
But it was his stint with Liverpool between 2004 and 2007 that was most successful as he was part of the Champions League winning side in 2005.
Garcia played in the extraordinary final win over AC Milan on penalties in Istanbul but he is best remembered for his controversial goal in the second leg of their semi-final against Chelsea.
After the teams had drawn 0-0 in the first leg at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool won the second leg 1-0 at Anfield.
Here’s the infamous goal that Garcia scored after just four minutes of the game which provoked a furious reaction from the Chelsea camp, in particular their manager Jose Mourinho.

And is this the proof that the goal should never have stood?

Even if the goal was disallowed, it should have been a penalty and Cech sent off.
Yeah but keep that on the QT, doesn’t tie in with José’s little dream world too well.
Dangerously high foot from Barros, could easily have been given as a foul against him, especially with the way the CL is officiated.
Obviously that is completely your own opinion and in no way influenced by the video of Andy Gray that you’ve just watched!
Had an incredible ability to be completely shite for 89 minutes of a game, and then light it up with a ridiculous goal. Gotta love Luis!
His goal vs Juve that year was also special

Always liked him, really nice player to watch.
Wish him the best!
Ah I remember this well as it caused a row in the pub I watched it in…
That ‘goal’ is nobody’s fault but Fifa’s. they make the rules! I was in the pub Sunday having lunch and the Newcastle/City game was on, I can’t repeat what was shouted at the ref from fellas in the pub but it amazes me how people STILL blame refs & linesmen for decisions while sitting in pub, home, stand, studio or commentary box after watching a replay 10 times from different angles while the poor ref & linesmen have to make a snap judgement. Ye they have goal line technology now (about 15 yrs too late) but what about giving each team 3 appeals and put the 4th official in a gantry somewhere like rugby or cricket and let him call to overrule the original decision. How hard is that!? Not to sound snobby cos I like watching s good game of football but I think some larger louts and especially Sky Sports would much prefer to keep it as it is, as it gives them all something to moan about and talk about for 3 days cos they’ve nothing else going on on their lives…..
Great little player, loved watching him play. Bet the Chelsea supporters still haven’t forgiven him, though…… :P
I certainly haven’t. Unfair to boil his entire career down to that incident, though. Savage little player, always looked good in possession.
There was also another 3D computer graphic released the day after the match showing that the ball had crossed the line…as to which one was right, who knows!? So no, that last video isn’t proof.
And as another comment says, it should have been a penalty & red card for Cech if the goal wasn’t given.
So liverpool are cheaters because of bad refereeing/officiating… *sigh*
In truth a disgracefully bad player who constantly lost the ball but had an unbelievable knack for scoring important goals….
Luis Garcia ………he drinks sangria! Came from barca to score us goals
Five foot seven of football heaven!
Miss him already!
That would have been the officials having to do the right thing… so they did not, and ended up doing the wrong thing…. sounds like the norm these days….
Is there anything to be said for telling us where he wound up his career or whether it was injury or father time that called him ashore. I know its the score so ye wouldnt want to risk giving too much actual info over the sensational tabloid rubbish ye peddle in order to stir up arguments among adults who should know better
“The Spaniard made the announcement on his official website.” – link in this line to his website where he made the statement about retiring.
Doesn’t seem to be any definitive reason, other than he felt the time was right.
He signed for puebla in Mexico in 2011 and for pumas unem also in top division there in 2012. He retired as he felt time was right not thru injury for those of you outthere who actually dont wanna have an argument about whetther a goal he scored ten years ago was a goal. That’s off Wikipedia. Hardly reasearch my man
Didn’t mind him as a player… Good luck to him.
Charlton sitting second in the premier league!
You know what, I completely forgot that Nigel Quashie played for Scotland, he’s in the squad listed at the bottom of the page!!
