Teenage prodigy Brecel advances to quarters

The 17-year-old Belgian fought back to beat Mark King in York earlier today.

WONDERKID LUCA BRECEL once again underlined his massive potential with a blistering performance to reach the quarter-finals of the UK Championships in York on Wednesday.

The Belgian teenage prodigy was in stunning form as he staged a thrilling fightback against veteran Mark King.

Showing a calm head on such young shoulders, the 17-year-old knuckled down to the task after falling 3-0 behind and a run of five frames in a row took him to the brink of victory.

King, 38 and who stunned world number five Mark Williams in the first round, clawed it back to within one frame, but Brecel seized his chance in the next and a brilliant long red clinched a 6-4 victory.

It was King’s second defeat to Brecel this year, having been beaten 10-8 in the final round of World Championship qualifying.

World number two Mark Selby also edged through to the last eight, coming from 3-0 behind to knock out Ryan Day 6-4.
