FORMER CLARE HURLINGÂ manager Ger Loughnane is battling leukaemia and is undergoing treatment at a Dublin hospital, according to Monday’s print edition of the Irish Daily Star.
The 57-year-old will be absent from his regular pundit’s role on RTE as Kilkenny take on Dublin in next weekend’s Leinster hurling final.
Loughnane, a school principal at St. Aidan’s National School in Shannon, Co. Clare, made his name as a player with the Banner County in the 1970s and 1980s, winning two All-Star awards.
He went on to lead Clare to their first All-Ireland title in 81 years in 1995, before repeating the achievement two years later.
Loughnane went on to manage the Galway hurlers for two years before leaving management to concentrate on his current media work.
