London and Leitrim to meet again as game ends in draw

The visitors started brightly in what has been a very closely fought contest.

Leitrim 0-13
London 2-7

Leitrim hit two last gasp points to avoid a Connacht SFC semi-final shock at Carrick-on-Shannon.

Little separated the teams during a fiercely contested encounter, but Leitrim survived to force a replay.

From an early stage it was apparent that there wouldn’t be much between Leitrim and London, who served up an entertaining tie out west.

It had been tight initially with Leitrim shading it after hitting three points in a row in the second quarter to build up a narrow lead.

The visitors, though, hit the front in the 34th minute courtesy of a Lorcan Mulvey goal which meant it was delicately poised at the break.

London started brightly and led by 0-3 to 0-2 after eight minutes as Seamus Hannon, Padraig McGoldrick, and Lorcan Mulvey contributed scores.

Leitrim responded with a Mulligan free, but he was forced to retire injured, which hindered the hosts.

A Mark Gottsche free had London back on terms before efforts from James Glancy, Brendan Brennan, and the impressive Paddy McGowan edged Leitrim 0-6 to 0-4 ahead.

But London pounced for a lucky goal on the stroke of half-time when Cathal McCrann failed to gather a McGoldrick delivery and the ball rebounded off Mulvey and into the back of the Leitrim net.

That major has boosted London significantly and as the teams departed at the interval another shock was very much on in the western province.

But after the restart Leitrim had most of the possession even though they weren’t too clinical converting changes.

Kevin Conlon and Declan Traynor traded scores, but then Leitrim made a burst to lead 0-10 to 1-5 by the 57th minute.

Three points on the spin from Paul Brennan, Robbie Lowe, and Brendan Brennan gave Leitrim the initiative, but London replied again.

Substitute Sean Kelly supplied the flick that gave London a second goal in the 59th minute as Paul Coggins’ charges had a slender 2-5 to 0-10 cushion.

A Conlon free restored parity, but Kelly then landed an exquisite score from an acute angle as London were gaining in belief and confidence.

Cathal McGee fisted London two clear, but Darren Sweeney and Conlon scrambled points over to draw level in the last minute.
