FOUR-TIME WORLD champion Katie Taylor will have the honour of leading Team Ireland into London’s Olympic Stadium at Friday’s opening ceremony for the 2012 Games.
Taylor’s selection was confirmed by the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) earlier this afternoon.
The 26-year-old boxer from Bray, County Wicklow will carry the Irish tricolour in front of a capacity crowd at the newly-built Stratford venue as well as billions of television viewers worldwide.
London 2012 is the first time that women’s boxing will be contested at the Games. Taylor, who has long been a vocal supporter of the sport’s Olympic credentials, is the top seed in the lightweight division as she aims to top a glittering career CV with Olympic gold.
