London 2012: Katie Taylor to carry Irish flag at Olympic opening ceremony

The Bray boxer has been selected to lead Team Ireland in Friday’s showpiece.

FOUR-TIME WORLD champion Katie Taylor will have the honour of leading Team Ireland into London’s Olympic Stadium at Friday’s opening ceremony for the 2012 Games.

Taylor’s selection was confirmed by the Olympic Council of Ireland (OCI) earlier this afternoon.

The 26-year-old boxer from Bray, County Wicklow will carry the Irish tricolour in front of a capacity crowd at the newly-built Stratford venue as well as billions of television viewers worldwide.

London 2012 is the first time that women’s boxing will be contested at the Games. Taylor, who has long been a vocal supporter of the sport’s Olympic credentials, is the top seed in the lightweight division as she aims to top a glittering career CV with Olympic gold.

Open thread: who should carry the tricolour at the Olympic opening ceremony?

Big surprise that Ireland would promote itself with someone representing a sport synonymous with violence. Sad.

Yeah John, he’s a troll of epic proportions. He’s not even a very good troll but a rather tiresome and insignificant one.

Are you sure you’re not called Patrick Moore , though I suppose anyone with the name of our lunar neighbour qualifies as a proper spaceman…

Fantastic news, I’m delighted for Katie what an honour to be chosen to represent your country in this way & in a new Olympic event too. Can’t wait for the games to start, women are still vastly under-rated in sport on TV in Ireland hopefully this will change but I won’t hold my breath.
