Adam Lallana got his side off the mark with a fine goal at Anfield. Peter Byrne

Liverpool beat the Baggies to get back to winning ways

Jordan Henderson’s second half strike secured the three points for Liverpool.

ADAM LALLANA OPENED his Liverpool account in style as Brendan Rodgers’s side claimed a first win in four Premier League games by edging West Bromwich Albion 2-1 on Saturday.

Lallana scored his first Liverpool goal since signing from Southampton on the stroke of half-time at Anfield after a darting run and a neat exchange with Jordan Henderson.

Saido Berahino equalised from the penalty spot in the 56th minute, but Raheem Sterling teed up Henderson for what proved to be the decisive goal five minutes later.

Henderson’s strike enabled Liverpool to bounce back from their mid-week defeat by Basel in the Champions League and saw them provisionally climb to sixth place in the table.

Rodgers brought Rickie Lambert into his starting XI in place of Mario Balotelli and saw his side make an enterprising start, with West Brom goalkeeper Ben Foster obliged to save from Lallana and Lambert.

Inspired by Berahino, who saw a rasping shot parried by Simon Mignolet before heading over, West Brom came back into the game, only for Lallana to put Liverpool ahead in the 45th minute.

After wriggling away from three defenders, the England midfielder poked the ball to Henderson, whose clever back-heel freed Lallana to arrow a left-foot drive into the bottom-right corner.

Berahino sent Mignolet the wrong way from the penalty spot 11 minutes into the second half after Dejan Lovren was penalised for a foul on the West Brom striker that appeared to take place just outside the area.

But minutes later, Sterling shuffled into the visitors’ box and steered the ball back for Henderson, who swept a low, first-time shot past England colleague Foster.

Alan Pardew should hide this fan’s banner before Mike Ashley sees it

Not great but better than the last 3 games we’ve played. It’s clear that we desperately need Sturridge and Allen back asap.

If this was a United article the headline would say, ‘ Lucky United squeeze past West Brom ‘

Hehehe, was thinking ‘Baggies drop points’. Hard to believe, 5 years ago, they were dominant, Fergie let some serious rot step in…. Signing RVP was a band aid over an decapitation.

I’m a hell of a lot happier now then this time last year. I hated half the squad and especially the Moyes last year

Barry, I am old enough to remember the great days Liverpool had, and watching Man U right now reminds me of the downfall. Man U must turn this around within a few years, or it could take much longer to fix. Fergie left a complete mess for whoever took over. Moyes never had a chance. LVG is smart enough, but must be given the time, even if it goes wrong. Right now, Man U are like an injured beast, and everyone is going to bite at them, see now as the best chance they will ever have to take them, as you saw last year for many teams.

United will turn it around very soon. 2 years id imagine. Its different to the early 90s when Liverpool dropped off a little. United are are huge corporation with Shareholders and business people with so much money involved that failure will not be allowed. That’s why when moyes couldn’t get Cpl mathematical they sacked him. Tol much money and power involved compared to the early 90s to let it happen again. That’s why the leeds thing couldn’t happen to United or Liverpool or Arsenal. It could happen to city and Chelsea if Russian money and Arab money left. The premier league is a business and the teams are products. We just happen to enjoy the football that goes with the business model…. bit real and heavy for Saturday evening but, there ya go.

Agreed, but not in the way they had success before…. That is over. I cannot see anyone dominating like Man U did and Pool before that. Those days are gone. Too much money in the game. But yes…. If things change, money leaves certain clubs, Pool and Man U will still be the big draw in England.

Twenty, that deal is more about selling jerseys than building a future. Being a huge club will no doubt generate money, but you need wise investment for the future too….. In Baseball, the Yankees know that will rake it in no matter what they do on the field, in Hockey, Toronto Maple Leafs make serious money, but rubbish on the ice. Got to make sure any owners want success too, not just a business investment.

I don’t ever see team dominate the way Liverpool in the 70s and 80s , and Manchester United did in the 90s and 00s did. Again too much money involved with other teams

Well Graham we can’t all be as dominant as Liverpool. Running away with the league so u are. United 2 points behind with a game tomorrow. Hard to believe a supporter of a team who are in disarray since Hannibal orchestrated a move for himself could sound so smug while commenting on Man U on a Liverpool thread too !…

Couldn’t agree more Farmer but it would make compete sense to pull out all the stops to bring Ronaldo back if your were going to sell. We wait and see ! But what the guys are saying about Liverpool and Utd is true, I can see City and Chelsea dropping from top 4 in the next 5-10 years as their not big enough to fund the massive signing from there own revenue and the sugar Daddy’s will get board and move on.
