FAI confirm Liverpool v Shamrock Rovers friendly for Aviva Stadium in May

Luis Suarez and Daniel Sturridge will be bringing their goalscoring double act to Dublin soon.

THE FAI HAS confirmed that Shamrock Rovers will host Premier League title chasers Liverpool at the Aviva Stadium on Wednesday, 14 May.

Trevor Croly’s side will take on the Reds in a 5:30pm kick-off at the Lansdowne Road venue that will mark the end of the Merseyside club’s season.

The last meeting of the storied clubs was 32 years ago at The hoops’ former home ground of Milltown. Ian Rush netted for Liverpool on the day. Now an ambassador for the club, Rush commented, ““I played in the game against Shamrock Rovers over three decades ago and I remember scoring that goal. It’ll be great to play them again and take away a win this time rather than a draw.”

The meeting between two sides that have shared 35 league titles in their respective countries will be highly anticipated and tickets can be bought during a pre-sale period from 3pm today until Friday, 28 March, when general admission seats can be picked up. Tickets can be purchased through the FAI and on Ticketmaster.

Liverpool’s chief commercial officer noted that Jim Beglin, signed by Liverpool from Rovers in 1983, was Bob Paisley’s last ever signing as Reds boss.

Rovers chairman Jonathan Roche commented, “It will see two clubs with strong histories of success and great fans face each other in what should be an entertaining game of football and a great occasion. It will be a great game for our players to be involved in, and also a good day out for our fans and Irish supporters of Liverpool, many of whom are also SSE Airtricity League supporters.”
