Liverpool chief insists Dalglish's job is safe

Chairman Tom Werner does not see any other senior management departures after Damien Comolli parted company with the club earlier today.

TOM WERNER, CHAIRMAN of Liverpool FC, has given his full backing to manager Kenny Dalglish.

On a day that saw the club part company with Director of Football Damien Comolli, Werner has said that the Frenchman’s departure will affect Dalglish’s position and added that he does not foresee any changes to senior management in the immediate future.

Much has been made about Liverpool’s poor league form this season with a number of their recent signings being the most heavily criticised. Despite the Carling Cup win and an FA Cup semi-final meeting with city rivals Everton on Saturday, a run of two wins from their last 10 Premier League games prompted the Fenway Sports Group into action and it was the head of former Spurs DoF Comolli which rolled.

“I think it’s fair to say no supporter would be delighted with the results we’ve achieved this year,” Werner explained on the Liverpool FC website.

We feel we are a club that needs to be perceived as the strongest club in football and we want to get there. Frankly, we make these decisions with a great deal of care because it’s our track record in Boston to give people authority and we’ve had great success with our manager, who was there for eight years, and our general manager, so we prefer stability.

“But when it’s time to act, we need to act. We’re coming close to the end of the season and the transfer window for the summer, and we felt it was important to make this change expeditiously.”

The owners clearly do not believe the club’s current standing is acceptable and have also allowed head of sports medicine & science Peter Brukner to leave this afternoon. When asked about the possibility of replacing Kop legend and current boss Dalglish however, the American ruled it out and added that other sackings are unlikely for the time being.

“Absolutely not,” he said. “We’ve got great confidence in Kenny. We feel the team is going to make strides in the future and he enjoys our full support.”

“We believe the senior management is very strong, Ian Ayre is an outstanding managing director. His charge is to raise revenue so that we can put the resources into strengthening our football club.

“We’ve got great confidence in the other people in football operations, and so the answer is there will be no future changes of significance.”
