TITLE HOPEFULS ARSENAL travelled north to take on Liverpool at Anfield in a mouth-watering Premier League showdown. We went minute-by-minute. Email adrian@thescore.ie, tweet us @thescore_ie or comment below.
Full-time: Liverpool 5 Arsenal 1
Let’s football.
League leaders Arsenal return to the scene of so many of their memorable clashes through the years; Anfield. Liverpool lie in fourth spot, just two points ahead of local rivals Everton. Brendan Rodgers has named his team for the game:
Let’s have those predictions.
And here’s the Arsenal XI tasked with keeping their title bid on track:
Szczesny, Sagna, Mertesacker, Koscielny, Monreal, Wilshere, Arteta, Ox-Chamberlain, Cazorla, Ozil, Giroud.
Ray Parlour was in Dublin this week to promote Setanta’s coverage of this game and others. Here’s what he told our Ben Blake:
“It’s a massive game for both clubs. With an early kick-off you can always get one over on the teams around you but Anfield is a really tough place to go.
“Walking down that tunnel you get butterflies because it’s a great stadium. I’m sure the Arsenal players will be a little bit nervous but also confident that they can get a result. If the do get a win it will be a big three points.”
David O’Leary’s perched outside Anfield with BT Sport’s Jake Humphries and Steve McManaman, recalling that night in 1989 when Micky Thomas won the title for Arsenal.
There was five Irish internationals on the Anfield pitch that May night in 1989. (Can you name them without Googling?)
This weekend Ireland’s management ticket are on the road again, to paraphrase Willie Nelson, but our squad is drawn from teams further down the food chain these days. Here’s where Martin O’Neill and Roy Keane will be over the coming days.
Macca’s trying to convince Luis Suarez that he once wore No 7 at Anfield too.
Here’s what Arsene Wenger had to say about this fixture during the week:
“Saturday is a good moment for us to win a big game because we have a big month ahead. We need to dominate the game in order to keep (Luis) Suarez and (Daniel) Sturridge quiet. We must control possession.
“I am convinced mentally we are prepared, we have shown great response when we’ve had difficulties. Physically we are prepared as well, we need to rotate so we need as many players available as we can.
“The closer you get to the end, the more vital every game becomes. But we are enjoying it and we have fought very hard.”
An early kick-off doesn’t hamper a rousing rendition of You’ll Never Walk Alone before a minute’s applause for one-time Liverpool striker Tony Hateley who passed away this week.
Michael Owen says the title race would be all over by now if Arsenal had managed to sign Suarez. Agree?
We’re under way.
What a start. The much-maligned Michael Owen warned us that Liverpool would start like the clappers and he was, let’s be honest, quite right.
Steven Gerrard whipped in a free-kick from the left and the big centre half bundled it in off his thigh. Game on, Ger.
Strange one from a nervy-looking Mignolet in the Liverpool goal. Under little pressure, he bats the ball off Flanagan rather than catch it. It’s cleared behind for a corner which comes to nothing however. Coming up on 10 minutes elapsed and Liverpool have obviously had the better of this.
GOAL! Martin Skrtel is on a hat-trick and Arsenal are rocked on their heels! Steven Gerrard is again the provider for the centre half. Moments later Daniel Sturridge was through on goal but couldn’t manage to convert. This is nuts.
Oh my days. Luis Suarez almost scored one of the goals of the season just now. He took the ball on the full turn from 30 yards and wellied it off the base of the post.
Arsenal need to get a foothold in this game and quick. What do you think?
What a performance this is from Liverpool. They’re now three goals to the good but, to be frank, it could be twice that.
The third came from Raheem Sterling who was deemed onside when Luis Suarez threaded a ball between the Gunners’ defence and goal. Anfield seems to be absolutely rocking.
What do you make of this then?
GOAL! Daniel Sturridge gets in on the act after he’s played through.
‘I’ve never seen anything like this’ says Michael Owen who seems quite happy with the first 20 minutes here. Ridiculous stuff.
From Arsenal’s point of view, this is the worst start possible to a very, very tough run of games.
From the always good value Barry Glendenning at the Guardian:
Arsenal fans can at least console themselves with the knowledge that their team has overturned a four-goal half-time deficit before: last season against Reading they were 4-0 down and won 7-5.
File under: clutching at straws, perhaps?
This is cruel:
Meanwhile, Jack Wilshere has clattered into Stevie G, which was duly noted by the England skipper.
And we’re off again. Let’s see if Arsene Wenger’s half-time team talk has had any influence on his team.
Jack Wilshere shows some ambition at last as he drives forward and cuts across Jordan Henderson who’s booked for fouling his England colleague. Santi Cazorla takes the free-kick but whips it high and over the bar.
This is ridiculous. Arsenal fans are streaming down the steps and heading for home. Raheem Sterling was played through and after a lucky ricochet off the Arsenal keeper, he scored his second of the game.
Almost an hours in and five goals down, Arsene Wenger is going to make some changes. Looks like Gibbs, Rosicky and Podolski.
Star from @sportingintelligence: “This is the first time either side has scored five goals in a league meeting between Liverpool and Arsenal since #lfc 5 #afc 0 in April 1964″.
As I type, Luis Suarez almost catches WojciechSzczesny napping with a free-kick attempt at the top corner. Think Gary McAllister in the derby via Montevideo.
The Arsenal skipper slams a penalty down the centre of the goal. Arteta’s counterpart Gerrard took down the Ox in the box and the Spaniard tucked away the subsequent spotter.
So what does this mean for Arsenal’s season then? Man City will be expected to go top later today with a win in Norwich while Arsene Wenger will attempt to rally his dressing-room ahead of a run of Man Utd, Liverpool again in the Cup and Munich.
Unlucky Fantasy Football managers, Luis Suarez heads off without a goal to make way for Iago Aspas. He was class though.
Sterling is denied a hat-trick by the Gunners keeper when he breaks through again.
Remember that Suarez attempt I was no about in the first half? You remember stuff I say, right?
Well this is it:
That’s the rest of the afternoon sorted.
Full-time: What a result. Arsenal now face a major test of their credentials while Liverpool have again given notice that they’re a serious team. What did you make of it?
Thanks for all you who tried to answer the pre-game teaser about the five Irish internationals on the pitch for the famous 1989 Liverpool-Arsenal game (no-one).
Here’s the answer anyway: Ray Houghton, Steve Staunton, Ronnie Whelan, John Aldridge and David O’Leary.
Thanks too for your company throughout; keep the comments coming.
As a united fan I can’t see why Liverpool supporters are obsessed with 4th spot. That team destroying Arsenal today should have the title in their sights.
It’s all about trying to keep Suarez Andrew then push on next season. Would love to see Rodgers with money in the CL next year..
If you saw how they played against west brom You’d know why. Arsenal are soft . They have over performed all season, ozil hiding, Ramsey off the boil. No leaders. If Liverpool could play half as good as this every week, then you’d say ya, bring on the title but they could draw against Fulham wed night
Suarez is your favourite player now but
When he hands in a transfer request ye will hate him
Spot on Mark. I’ve being a Liverpool fan for too long now to get carried away.
Yes jack. That’s how it works. Remember how utd fans turned on rooney at the end of last season? And how they will turn on van persie come summer.
Don’t try pretend you are different to the rest of us. You are not.
IF he hands one in. Big if. Even if he does, I’d wish him the best, not far off the best player in the world now. €120million in Rodger’s skyrocket and the CL money. Happy days.
Ramsey off the boil? he’s injured
Before he got injured, only out 2 weeks
Rooney… You guys love him, yet every year he treats you fans like dog diarrhea.
I certainly didn’t turn on him and he’s after saying he wants to stay, and rvp was should stay after watching shitty arsenal lose 5-1 to liverpool
Rooney……your hero is scouse, your hero is scouse….Wayne Rooney your hero is scouse!!
Yep that’s Manc logic for ya! I was at Old Toilet for a pool game 6/7 years ago and for 90 minutes they spouted Gerrard and Carraghers u scouse tw*ts. Ah, where is shrek from? In fairness, most of em wouldnt know with em living in London!
As a lifelong utd fan (from Manchester before anyone accuses me of gloryhunting) I have to admit 4th belongs to Liverpool. They could finish higher on this form. as much as it pains me to say, they deserve champs league football. We havent a hope of catching them.
Fair play to you, Pat
I am gonna bet you remember the united lean times, i .e. you are older than 40
40!!! I’m not quite there yet Mark:-) But I am old enough to remember how bad united were at one point. Guess I’m reliving my youth this season in a way….
Absolutely Pat. Fair dues to Liverpool. United have fallen off their perch. It was really Ferguson kept them nailed to it!
I feel a victory for the mighty Pool coming….very good record in early kick-offs against the Gunners….3-1 Liverpool! YNWA
We’re tearing them apart!
You playing for them aswell
Yes he is paddy
Clearly
Sure he has plenty of time to comment. Not like he has any Arsenal players to watch. They’re an endangered species today
Have to make it quick lads, trying to get a sixth.
I think if Liverpool can win today they’ll be very close to securing 4th place as I expect spurs v everton to draw tomor and hopefully arsenal beat man u next week, a lot ifs but u have to dream:-)
YNWA 2 ARSE 0
My apologies 3-0
My apologies 4-0
That’s quite alright Shawn, don’t feel a bit bad about it!
Soft centred Arsenal begin to show their true colours. They will be out of everything by the end of February.
Thanks Will. Watch this space YNWA
Don’t listen to Irish football fans anymore love Liverpool one minute and united then you lot slag of England full of shit
ZZZzzzzZZZZzzzzzZZZzzzzzZzZzZzZZZzzzzz…
YNWA 5 (five) ARSE 0.
Oh, youre one of them aiden. Too cool for school hipster.
At Anfield in the sun
Pool five and Arsenal one
All my days I will sing and praise
Of the Pool team that played that day
YNWA
Giroud in the papers today saying Arsenal would blitz Liverpool
Come on the gunners
Come on the arsenal…. Yes I am a Man U fan, but my support for arsenal is purely based on the fact that united need them to win
Same here Leo
You’re more likely to see a united supporter commenting on games when united aren’t playing.they go very quite when united are playing for some reason.
Ehh that’s cause we are watching the match
I think it is crucial mufc beat arsenal and city.I think they can draw with arsenal and beat city if they have
januzaj,Rooney,rvp and mata starting
@Leo
Yeah right, nothing to do with them playing against Liverpool….
@Jack
Yeah it could be crucial to make it into the Europa League next season for Utd….
Liverpool didn’t even get into the Europa league last year.Im confident united will get to the champions league
Still confident Jack? I’m confident you’ll be quite on this thread for the rest of the day. Fairly confident of that mate.
Lol
Arsenal’s season will collapse from here on in. Same every February and this yr no different – especially when u look at their forthcoming fixtures. Bet Walcott isn’t smiling today !!!! Hahahahahahaha
Ole. Ooole oooooole ooooooooooole oooole ole ole. aw!!! ole oooole YNWA
United supporters are gone quite again.
Liverpool will be cheering for united during the week. Get at least a draw against Arsenal, keep ye in the hunt for thursday night football!
It’s times like this it’s great to have Arsenal fans in the family, oh the slaggings…
Wenger must be feeling 40 million plus one emotions at the moment
Hilarious! The camera just showed some arsenal fan crying in the stand as the fifth goal went in!hahahaha!!
Liverpool doing their talking ON the pitch.
Gooners to dominate the midfield & win by a single goal.
2-1 Arsenal.
Arsenal are better, this coming from a united supporter
And I’m delighted to say so far I’m very wrong.
Skittles on a hat-trick!
They gave Liverpool a 4 goal start
Ha…. They are biding their time!
Yeah jack, they are much better.
Feel sorry for Arsenal with all the plastic fans leaving early
As an arsenal fan I’m in complete shock, one of the best defenses in the league not at the races today but have to say,an absolute masterclass from Liverpool in the first half. COME ON THE ARSENAL (Please!!!!!)
City could have scored 10 against that gunners defence, not as good as u think.
2nd best defense in the league last year and even with the 6 conceded to city 2nd defense in the league before today. Stats don’t lie.
But they don’t always tell the truth either.
Bayren will tear em apart as well. Alright against the crap teams, get shown up against the top ones.
4 now!?!?
As an arsenal supporter im sickened. Liverpool outclassed them and arsenal gave away way too many balls in midfield. They deserved to loose.
An Arsenal win hopefully and we can say goodbye to all the pool fans for another season.
Even if arsenal win , Liverpool will still be. 4 points minimum ahead of united and united are playing arsenal next week and Liverpool in few weeks. How would they be gone for another season? Your comment makes no sense.
So’s your face
This comment makes even less sense
@begrudgy
Not going to happen….
Begrudgy… Hahahahaha
I hate goodbyes
I see Liam Brady warming up, Welcome back. Hahahahaha!
So’s your face always makes sense
Ha ha… we’re here for a while yet…
Begrudgy, we have been bad for years and still here….never seen a big club like Arsenal take so much hammering though….8-2, man city, 6-2,3?, today… 5-1….. Thats disgraceful…..even threw away a 4 goal lead to Newcastle…. Man, must be thorns in your throat….
3 way title race – Chelsea, City and Liverpool.
Yes yes and f’in yes…..whooooo.
Arsenal haven’t lost in Anfield since 08. Gooners to win 2:0 and Suarez to get sent off. It’s all gona be too much for him as he sees the club he wanted to join, give his team a lesson.
Arsenal to begin their Titanic crash part of the season with Arsene saying ‘I did not see that iceberg. I will have a look on the monitor later.’ Come on Liverpool!!
@gnic
Tell us more about your delusion!
Is it treatable….
Ha ha so far off the mark
Two sides trying to play football this year.. looking forward to the game. like to see fellow irishman Rogers do well, but have a fancy for arsenal
Arsenal fans(the ones I know) are the most arrogant fans around! Told them few weeks ago they’d bottle the title.
As it happens
And it’s LIVE!
Is it gooners or goners :-)
Nice biased reporting on the journal. Arsenal team?
Maybe not released yet?
Suarez surely won’t be the only Liverpool S not to score today?
2 all draw is my prediction. Liverpool good going forward but poor at the back.
I wouldn’t put money on it. :-)
Any chance of next goal wins.
Good man Kevin. You’re playing a blinder. About time too. Fairly invisible so far this season
Sorry, just seen it so.
I wouldn’t count Liverpool in that. City and Chelsea
It’s not September, it’s the middle of February with City and Chelsea still to come to Anfield where United, Everton and arsenal have been well beat.
No champions league football either, just the league to concentrate on, the tough defeat at city over Xmas could be costly.
Barstoolers
Stool.
I watched it on my couch. Not a barstool in sight.
I think the Arsenal fan was sucking on the stool, more bearable, thats why you did not see it.
