Liverpool reveal Anfield redevelopment plans

A £260 million collaboration between the club and the council will pave the way for an expansion of the famous stadium and change its surroundings.

PLANS THAT WILL  see the areas surrounding Liverpool’s Anfield home regenerated have been revealed.

A £260 million collaboration between the Merseyside club, Liverpool City Council and Your Housing Group will pave the way for an expansion of the famous stadium and revitalise its surroundings.

Around 300 houses in the area will be demolished, though a further 550 are set to be refurbished as part of a push to improve the area. Nearby Stanley Park, which had been the proposed site of a new stadium for Liverpool prior to those plans being abandoned due to cost issues, will also be renovated. The regeneration scheme does not explicitly involve the expansion of Anfield, but will allow the mooted extension of the Main Stand and Anfield Road areas of the ground to take place.

And Liverpool’s managing director Ian Ayre has expressed delight following the announcements.

“The unveiling of this vision for the wider regeneration of the Anfield area is another important step towards transforming the area for the better,” he told the club’s official website.

“The club has a track record of working successfully with LCC and others to drive forward improvements to the area, having made a major investment towards the transformation of Stanley Park.

“We are looking forward to working with the partnership and playing a part in the development of the regeneration vision and we strongly encourage local residents, businesses and community groups to get involved in the process and have their say.

“This is also an important milestone as we seek to investigate the feasibility of expanding our stadium. We will continue this work, which is just one part of the wider Anfield vision, and there is a great deal of work still to be done to bring those plans to fruition.”
