Galway 0-15 Sligo 2-14 (FT)

Hello, and welcome to our first GAA liveblog of the weekend – Galway vs Sligo in the Connacht Senior Football Championship.

Here are the two teams for today:

Galway: Adrian Faherty; Kieran Mc Grath, Finian Hanley, Keith Kelly; Gareth Bradshaw, Johhny Duane, Gary O Donnell; Joe Bergin, Greg Higgins; Gary Sice, Damien Burke, Thomas Flynn; Sean Armstrong; Paul Conroy, Mark Hehir.

Sligo: Philip Greene; Neil Ewing, Johnny Martyn, Ross Donovan; Charles Harrison, Mark Quinn, Paul McGovern; Shane McManus, Eugene Mullen; Brendan Egan, Pat Hughes, Alan Costello; David Kelly, Adrian Marren, Mark Breheny.

And we’re off…

Sligo 0-1 Galway 0-1 Adrian Marren gets an excellent point, after Gary Sice opens the scoring with a relatively straightforward free.

Sean Armstrong has restored Galway’s advantage from a free, before Mark Hehir adds to their lead.

12 minutes gone at Salthill and not much between the two sides at the moment.

Hehir scores from a free once again.

Galway are undoubtedly the superior side on paper and their class is beginning to tell here, as they extend their advantage.

Sean Armstrong adds another point for Galway.

With 19 minutes gone, Sligo need a quick response.

Mark Breheny has got Sligo’s first point in a while, as the bid to stay in this game at the very least. Adrian Marren then followsup Breheny’s effort with another wonderfully struck point.

Despite Galway’s dominance in the opening stages (at least in terms of possession), they now only lead by two points.

Alan Costello brings his side to within a point of their opposition, before Gary Sice gives Galway some breathing with their fifth successful free of the game so far.

Mark Hehir gets his fourth point of the day and only Galway’s second from play.

Just over five minutes until half-time.

Mark Hehir has scored two more points (both frees) to bring his overall tally to six, consequently putting a more flattering look on the scoreboard as far as Galway are concerned.

Adrian Marren gets a bizarre point, as Sligo keep the pressure on Galway. His relatively routine free only hits the post, but he gratefully collects the rebound and hits it over the bar.

We’re now on the verge of half-time…

HALF-TIME: GALWAY 0-9 SLIGO 0-5

So an intriguing first half. Galway lead by four points, but have still produced a somewhat disappointing performance thus far, never really appearing to get out of second gear.

Sligo have failed to fully capitalise on their opponents’ ostensibly lax approach, but can take solace from the fact that they’ll be playing with the wind in the second half.

(Brendan Egan is tackled by Garreth Bradshaw – INPHO/Cathal Noonan)

The second half is underway…

It’s been less-than-vintage football so far in the second, as reflected by the lack of scores, with both sides missing decent opportunities.

Meanwhile, Gareth Bradshaw has been booked for Galway.

Adrian Marren has scored the first point of the second half, with Sligo still very much in this game.

Michael Meehan then replaces the disappointing Thomas Flynn for Galway, illustrating Alan Mulholland’s dissastisfaction with the manner in which his side have started the second half.

David Kelly and Mark Quinn subsequently compound Galway’s worries.

Adrian Marren levels the scores, as Sligo take full advantage of playing with the wind behind them.

Shortly thereafter, Tony Taylor repaces Eugene Mullen.

Galway have still failed to score in this second half, emphasising their increasingly lackadasical approach to this game.

Paul Conroy restores Galway’s advantage, before Adrian Marren produces an excellent pass to find Alan Costello, who makes no mistake, levelling the sides once more.

Finian Hanley is penalised for an infringement on Paul McGovern, and Sligo have a penalty!

Finian Hanley goes off with what looks like a shoulder injury. Colin Forde comes on in his stead.

Mark Hehir and Gary Sice keep Galway in contention with a point apiece from two frees.

David Kelly gets a point back for Sligo, before Paul Conroy makes it a one-point game again.

GOAL FOR SLIGO! Adrian Marren adds his second of the game, finishing consummately from close range.

A shock is very much on the cards here, with less than five minutes remaining.

Adrian Marren has just taken Sligo’s advantage to six points. He has probably been the best player on the pitch today.

Michael Meehan and Paul Conroy get what are only consolation points for Galway at this stage.

FULL-TIME: SLIGO 2-14 GALWAY 0-15

So a significant upset, as Sligo very much silence those who were suggesting Galway were back to their best following their comprehensive win over Roscommon last month.

It was a notable scalp Kevin Walsh’s side, who were very much helped along the way by an inspired performance from Adrian Marren, who scored two goals, in addition to registering a number of points.

Alright, that’s all from me for this evening. Thanks for reading, and enjoy the rest of your weekends.

@zoncolan: A captain of his time, but the reality is his mentor was Brian Clough. And he came from a time when toxic masculinity was preached.

@zoncolan: Yes, masculinity was a part of sport. By your definition of sport, the gender row in the Olympics wouldn’t have been reported on. But it was. Go on, I dare you to tell the editors to take the Olympics article down.

I enjoy Keanes punditry for the same reason I liked Dunphys, they’re likely to say anything. It’s entertainment. Who wants to watch boring talking heads all the time. BBC coverage is woeful and RTE when Didi or Sadlier are not on is even worse.
