Fulham 0-3 Swansea

Wigan 1-1 West Brom

Phew, breathless stuff today! We’re straight into the Premier League after this morning’s FA Cup action with Swansea looking to continue their upwards surge away to Fulham and West Brom hoping to give themselves a big fillip in the relegation battle at home to West Brom.

The teams:

Wigan: Al Habsi, Alcaraz, Caldwell, Figueroa, Boyce, McCarthy, McArthur, Beausejour, Moses, Di Santo, Maloney. Subs: Kirkland, Crusat, Ben Watson, Gomez, McManaman, Diame, Stam.

West Brom: Foster, Jones, McAuley, Ridgewell, Shorey, Thomas, Morrison, Mulumbu, Scharner, Brunt, Long. Subs: Daniels, Andrews, Dorrans, Dawson, Tamas, Cox, Fortune

Swansea have started much the better at Craven Cottage and should be 1-0 ahead.

Kenny Dalglish and Steve Clarke are in the crowd at the JJB watching Wigan, given that they’re playing them at Anfield next week. And, of course – as Gareth McAuley also almost opens the scoring for West Brom – the difficulty of that fixture will only highlight the need for Roberto Martinez’s side to get a win immediately.

It’s slow enough at the minute. Wigan created a lot of chances early on but notmuch activity at the moment, in either game.

Alcaraz surging forward from deep a lot to open up chances. That’ll be necessary for Wigan today. Not only are West Brom tough to break down but a team that doesn’t score much need to attack.

GOAL! Fulham 0-1 Swansea

No less than Swansea deserve. A ball is fizzed across the box, Sinclair guies it back in and Sugurdsson heads it past Schwarzer.

James McCarthy smashes the bar with a brilliant strike! Moses is immediately onto but Foster jumps up to block!

Wigan have been very impressive in this half but – as ever – they look like they’re going to go into the dressing-room for half-time without reward.

On balance of play in so many games this season, Wigan don’t deserve to go down. On balance of being able to do the basics of scoring and defending, they emphatically do.

Half-times at both games. Swansea ahead but not entirely comfortable at Fulham. Wigan entirely comfortable but not ahead against West Brom.

And the second halves are under way.

GOAL! Wigan 1-0 West Brom

And Wigan get the goal they fully deserve… and it might be a big one in the relegation battle! Moses cuts down the right and crosses for James McArthur to eventually direct the ball in!

But, straight away, we almost had an illustration of Wigan’s inherent problems this season. Jerome Thomas broke for West Brom and only a poor touch and some desperate defending prevented an immediate equaliser.

Wigan completely on top here, Alcaraz just missing a free-kick delivery there that would have extended their lead. As it stands, this is still on a knife-edge.

GOAL! Wigan 1-1 West Brom

Oh, disaster for Wigan! They were utterly in control and, as such, should have been out of sight. But that’s the lesson: Paul Scharner is allowed easily guide in a corner as Alcaraz went awol. A lesson for the Paraguayan: concentrate on the defensive side of your game. It may well doom Wigan this season.

GOAL! Fulham 0-2 Swansea

More super football from Swansea and another goal for the brilliant Sigurdsson. After a fine exchange with Routledge before guiding the ball past Schwarzer.

At the JJB, meanwhile, Youssuf Mulumbu is lucky not to be sent off after lashing out following a tackle. This one really simmering. Twenty minutes left and there’s more – potentially season-defining – action in this.

Hard to take your eyes off Wigan-West Brom at the moment (which is a problem when you also have to keep track of another game). It’s really open and as Wigan surge forward in search of a winner.

You know what Wigan need now, of course? Charles N’Zogbia. Unfortunately for them – and him – he’s struggling at Villa Park these days.

Scramble in the West Brom box as Boyce throws himself at a header and misses it, Di Santo then swings at it but the Baggies desperately clear.

GOAL! Fulham 0-3 Swansea

Swansea convert this from a professional away win to a prolific one: Joe Allen cuts inside from the left, beats two men and shoots low past Schwarzer.

One Irishman (and a partial one) goes off for Wigan as McCarthy and Shaun Maloney go off for Diame and Callum McManamanan. Keith Andrews, meanwhile, about to come on for West Brom.

And Keith Andrews almost scores on his introduction as West Brom break brilliantly from a Wigan corner. Hits it wide though.

Oh and that feels like such a waste for Wigan and McManamanan! The winger was found with plenty of space in the box just to the left of goal but he took far too long on it, couldn make up his mind and is dispossessed. Clearly frustrated, he then lashed out and earned himself a booking for a tackle from behind.

Three minutes of normal time left and looks like West Brom have quelled Wigan. Given their next five games involve Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal, United and Stoke, they really need something here…

Four added minutes at the JJB…

And Diame sends the ball wide from just yards out! In fact, it didn’t even make itwide. It hid Franco Di Santo and went towards the by-line!

Crusat’s cross hits the post after a deflection off McAuley! It’s the third time they’vehit the frame of the goal today!

A minute left. Wigan must do something.

Full-time at both games. Wigan can’t get the win their play so richly deserved… but they only have themselves to blame for some awful finishing and one much worse moment of defending. In truth, it sums up their season. And, given what’s to come, looks like it might send them down.

That was Roberto Martinez’s 100th Premier League point. But it will feel like zero.
