Kilkenny 1-20 Clare 0-14

13.51 – Here are the teams for today’s clash:

Kilkenny first …

Replacements: Eoin Murphy, Kieran Joyce, Conor Fogarty, Willie Phelan, John Tennyson, Mark Bergin, Tomás Breen, Padraig Walsh.

14.04 – Traffic delays are being blamed for the hold-up. 2.15pm is the new starting time.

Clare starting with Nicky O’Connell at 8 and Conor McGrath is in at 14. Davy Fitzgerald on the pitch giving his players a final motivational talk.

14.10 – Here is the starting line-up for the Banner:

14.13 – Referee Alan Kelly gets us underway. Charcoal clouds hang overhead.

14.26Sean Collins takes on Brian McEvoy and shows him a clean pair of heels before slotting over from 30 metres out. Fine score.

Nicky O’Connell then levels things up with a huge free, taken from his own half.

14.31 – John Mulhall runs into Cian Dillon and is upended. Blood spills from his forehead and the Clare defender needs treatment too. Richie Power has the relatively simple task of knocking the ball over from 25 metres out.

15.47 – Full-time and Kilkenny emerge as comfortable winners.

Eoin Larkin says the team were delighted to pull away with early scores in the second-half. He added:

The shower was bad enough but once that ended the wind dried it up … Hopefully we can stay around to watch the second match.

TG4 have given the man-of-the-match to Cillian Buckley, who imposed himself on the midfield in the second half. Kilkenny get a good work-out but were never in any real danger.

  • people are saying what a great job davy has done? they just got the shit beaten out of them by a kilkenny team that were very poor today. on todays second half performance it will be another 81 years before we win another all ireland.

  • Much as I would love it to be true that KK are a team in decline ….. It’s just not true. Worried about Waterford this summer. We need to improve a whole lot from the league.

    • Why is it of any Consequence to Waterford about Kilkenny’s Decline or Success Paul ??

Waterford’s Priority has always been to attempt to succeed on it’s available resources and in doing so The deise has Punched significantly above it’s weight with only Kilkenny appearing in More Semi Finals In The last Decade

Best of luck in Munster this Year Eoin Kelly’s reestablishment along with John Mullane is bound to give ye a much needed dimension in attack.

  • Making another league final is a Great testament to Brian Cody’s Hunger and Commitment to blooding in New Talent, Matt Ruth has had no Problem finding his potency in front of Goal, A man of the match for Cillian Buckley today. Some very solid play from Paul Murphy and both Fennelly’s right Throughout the campaign and not a mention of Shefflin’s absence makes me wonder what all of this Kilkenny are finished stuff is all about. One step at time please Begrudgers!!

    • Begrudgers? Can any Kilkenny fan just enter into a normal discussion about kilkennys over reliance on playing on the edge / cynical play without spouting the usual ole drivel cliches about knowing nothing or being a begrudger. I’m a cork man, of all the counties in Ireland cork men don’t have to begrudge a less successful gaa county who only play one sport, trust me!

  • diarmaid you just proved you know f all about anything, kilkenny are not a team on the decline with new blood and not even playing to full potential we are still in a league final oh and yes we will be in the all ireland final again this year without a doubt it will take one hell of a team to beat us now that is a fact, so when you know what your talking about come back till then keep your opinions to yourself no one wants to read them.

    • Oh I’m sorry is this the Kilkenny journal? So when I criticise your team I know nothing. That’s more of a reflection on you and Kilkenny than it is me there pal. I find the Kilkenny reaction amusing to say the least. Humble as always.

  • Could you please specifically point out what Drivel Cliches about Knowing Nothing or being a Begrudger that Involved you Personally in my statement.. And having read over you other comments you don’t seem to have the same class that I generally associate with the Cork mentality. Your fairly handy at spouting drivel cliches yourself. Accusing a Team of Constantly Playing Dirty is one of those typical examples. As you well know hurling is all about possession and the only way to win at hurling is to control possession and if a team has to slow down the tempo of it’s instinctive determination to win every ball, challenge and catch, to run it past the referee first then your going to fail and as for being Cynical well one thing is for Certain, Cynicism is by no means the Key to being respected which is why most Cork people I have met over the Years would always have a mutual Appreciation for Quality and Consistency of The Cats and I am very pleased to see The rebel Flag Flying again under Jimmy Barry. Unfortunately you seem to be another member of The Munster Begrudgers association with your references to Ger Loughnane, Munster, and of the obvious Cheap Shot at the fact that we haven’t won the Sam Mc Guire and Liam Mc Carthy like a lot of Counties Between Cork and Donegal Oh and By The Way Stop Pretending that we don’t think that ye fancy yourselves for a Sneaky crack at Liam Mc Carthy by hiding behind Tipp’s emergence as you call it. Either way I’m only going to quote on what I’ve read here in my response.

    • Sher I know ya, I am a full of sh*t begrudging know nothing kind of fella, simply because I voice an opinion that is growing increasingly loud and more frequent outside the boundaries of the county ye call home. Fair enough!

  • It’s a FACT now! Kilkenny are in decline, the new players they have in today aren’t anywhere near the players that are now moving on. That and they remind me of the Dublin footballers more and more. The second they lose the intensity, they lose everything! Tipp are the up and coming force. Thankfully Cork are coming too, we have some great young players coming through, who ironically tore Kilkenny apart.

    • Last year they were miserable in the League final and everyone jumped on the “cats days are numbered” bandwagon. Then the championship came along and order was restored. The natural balance of the universe :-)

  • Towmey need to weak up must be one of those hurlers on the ditch noes it all and probably never held a hurl in his life Kilkenny a very good and maby one of the best teams ever and there is some good hurlers coming but like ever hurling team it takes time you see

  • By The Way Best of luck In final Diarmaid you are the Favorites after all and you can’t Suppress Pedigree that’s for Sure! A fine Performance over Tipp despite Eoin Kelly and Co’s Best Efforts.

    • Not at all, as cynical as Kilkenny are, ye will still be massive favourites because of your incredible record over the last few years. We’ll be going looking for a tough game as preparation for the championship! But we would be foolish to think we could match the Kings so quickly! In JBM we may trust but we know Kilkenny are just the most awesome team that has ever graced any game in the universe!

  • I can’t say I’d be overly disappointed either than the powerhouses of hurling would be steming from where the powerhouses belong – MUNSTER!

    Reply
  • I have to say also, it’s a great relief that in the past few games Kilkenny have been seen for what they have always been. A cynical team who are constantly fouling and playing dirty. The last few games combination of cards is a final testament to that fact! Just annoying for those of us, like Ger Loughnane, who have been saying it for years!

  • Mr Towmey I feel you no nothing about hurling if you did you would not be on to critise what every one no kilkenny are one of the best teams every you or no one else can take that from them and yes there is other teames coming who will beat them in time to come and go on to win all Ireland’s mark my word I do no what I’m talking about best of luck to all county’s in the future
