Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s Cork side bounced back from being defeated by Tipperary in the Munster semi-final to claim qualifier victories over Offaly and Wexford. Michael Ryan’s Waterford side were seeking to bounce back from being defeated by Tipperary in the Munster final.

Welcome to Semple Stadium as we get set for a potentially cracking clash between Cork and Waterford this afternoon. There’s a huge crowd piling in for this one and there’s been a great atmosphere in Thurles in the build up to this game.

We’re expecting one change on the Cork team from the side that was announced during the week. It looks like Conor Lehane will be sidelined through illness as the Midleton youngster has been suffering with a virus over the last few days.
No official confirmation yet on who could be in for Lehane. But here’s the Cork team that was announced during the week.

It appears that Jamie Coughlan for Newtownshandrum will be the player into the Cork attack for Conor Lehane. The weather has deteriorated here with the earlier sunshine now replaced by showers. Both teams out on the field doing their warm-ups at present.
Spectators have just been informed over the public address that in the event of a draw today, there will be no extra time and instead a replay will be required. A draw is on offer at odds of 10/1 by the way. It’s likely to be a very tight game with Cork marginally favored at 8/13 while Waterford are on offer at 13/8.
That Cork change has now been confirmed with Jamie Coughlan lining up alongside Niall and Cian McCarthy in the Cork half-forward line. They have a difficult challenge ahead of them against what looks like Waterford’s strongest line on the pitch as Tony Browne, Michael Walsh and Kevin Moran form the half-back trio.
Westmeath’s Barry Kelly is the man in the middle for today’s game. There’s a place in the All-Ireland semi-final against Galway at stake on August 12th in Croke Park in today’s first game. It promises to be a huge afternoon of hurling action and we’re just a few minutes away from throw-in with both teams finishing off their warm-ups.

What early drama. Inside the opening seconds Cork’s Daniel Kearney plays in Luke O’Farrell who turns his man and unleashes a bullet against the crossbar. The rebound falls to Paudie O’Sullivan who dives in and strikes a shot against the post. Cork so close to a dream start there by finding the net.
Cork 0-1 Waterford 0-1: 3 mins – Cork get off the mark with Patrick Horgan tapping over a fine point but that is quickly cancelled out by a stunning effort at the other end from the right wing by John Mullane.
Couple of bad wides on either side with Waterford’s Thomas Ryan and Cork’s Patrick Horgan off target.
Waterford 0-2 Cork 0-1: 7 mins – Maurice Shanahan smashes over a free from 65 yards for Waterford after Stephen Molumphy was fouled by Patrick Cronin.
Cork 0-2 Waterford 0-2: 8 mins – Draw game now as Patrick Horgan converts a free for Cork. Starting to rain quite heavily which is going to impact on the match.
Cork 0-3 Waterford 0-2: 10 mins – And Cork hit the front courtesy of a Cian McCarthy point after he was picked out in space by Luke O’Farrell.
Cork 0-4 Waterford 0-2: 13 mins – Cork push further ahead through a Patrick Cronin point and that score arrived courtesy of excellent work by Tom Kenny, Jamie Coughlan and finally a clever pass by Luke O’Farrell.
Cork 0-5 Waterford 0-2: 15 mins – Cork are winning the breaking ball and it’s creating scoring opportunities for their forwards. On this occasion Niall McCarthy scoops it clear for Jamie Coughlan to fire a shot between the posts.
Cork 1-5 Waterford 0-2: 16 mins – We spoke about Cork’s dominance and it’s just been reflected as they pounced for the opening goal of the game. It’s struck home by Jamie Coughlan as he careered through the defence, showing blistering pace. But the move was originated by a brilliant catch and quick hand pass to offload by Paudie O’Sullivan.
Cork 1-5 Waterford 0-3: 20 mins – Waterford needed that as Maurice Shanahan bangs over a free. They are struggling in attack with only one point from play registered so far and Cork are more alert at midfield. The Waterford rearguard is looking vulnerable as well in the early stages.
Cork 1-5 Waterford 0-4: 22 mins – Waterford pull another score back with Tony Browne launching over a long-range free after John Mullane was fouled.
Cork 1-6 Waterford 0-5: 24 mins – Paudie O’Sullivan shows a neat turn of pace to fire over off his left before Maurice Shanahan registers Waterford’s first score from play in over 20 minutes. The action is starting to heat up and Waterford are playing in a more encouraging fashion. But Cork continue to hold the advantage with that Coughlan goal crucial.
Noticeable that John Mullane is playing very deep for Waterford around the middle of the pitch with Shane Walsh stationed inside with Thomas Ryan.
Cork 1-7 Waterford 0-7: 29 mins – Patrick Cronin is having a fine outing to date at midfield for Cork and he’s just popped over his second point of the game after a being fed by Sean Óg Ó hAilpín. Waterford are continuing to match them on the scoreboard however with Pauric Mahony lobbing over a point off his left and then Seamus Prendergast powers through for another point. Better from Waterford and they have cut the gap to three points.
Cork 1-7 Waterford 0-10: 31 mins – Suddenly Waterford are level. Firstly a superb score by Pauric Mahony from the left wing for Waterford but the plaudits go to John Mullane for creating the move and producing a sublime dummy in the middle of the pitch. Maurice Shanahan follows that up with another point after great work by Seamus Prendergast. Finally Stephen Molumphy points to tie the game.
Waterford 0-11 Cork 1-7: 34 mins – A remarkable turnaround here from Waterford. They’ve hit the front through a Shanahan free after being outplayed for the first 20 minutes. They’ve been excellent over the last few passages of play.
HALF-TIME: Cork 1-9 Waterford 0-11: The see-saw nature of the game continues. Vital point for Cork firstly from Cian McCarthy after Waterford had struck six on the trot and then Luke O’Farrell is fouled with Patrick Horgan rifling over the free to push Cork into a narrow lead at the break.

Cork just ahead at the break by a point but it’s as tight and tense as we imagined it would be. Cork made a blinding start which featured a brilliant goal by Jamie Coughlan yet Waterford have recovered splendidly to be very much in contention. Cork 1-11 Waterford 0-13: 44 mins – The teams continue to trade points with Patrick Horgan doing well on this occasion to point for Cork despite the pressure being exerted by the Waterford defence.
Cork 1-11 Waterford 0-14: 46 mins – Again we’re level, again it’s Maurice Shanahan who points for Waterford, this time from a ’65, and again this match is delicately poised.

Cork 1-12 Waterford 0-15: 50 mins – Can these teams be separated? Paudie O’Sullivan ties the game with a fine point for Cork after quick thinking by Jamie Coughlan with a sideline ball. John Gardiner is introduced to the Cork team in place of Eoin Cadogan and the Rebels supporters react with a huge cheer at the introduction of the Na Piarsaigh man.
Waterford 0-16 Cork 1-12: 52 mins – Pauric Mahony, who is having a fine game for Waterford, launches over an excellent point under pressure from the Cork defence.
Waterford 0-17 Cork 1-12: 54 mins – Waterford move ahead by two points and that could be a significant lead given how tight this match is. Shanahan converts a free after he was fouled himself.
Waterford 0-18 Cork 1-12: 56 mins – And now Waterford are ahead by three points after John Mullane raises a white flag when the ball is played back out to him by Eoin McGrath. Another Cork change with Stephen Moylan in for Jamie Coughlan.
Waterford miss chances to stretch their lead with Shanahan and Mullane both wide. Cork try to change matters by bringing in Lorcan McLoughlin for Cian McCarthy. They are struggling and have 10 minutes left to save their challenge.

FULL-TIME: Cork 1-19 Waterford 0-19: That’s it, Cork hold on to book an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Galway in Croke Park on August 12th. The ’65 that Waterford had late on, struck the upright and was cleared to safety by Cathal Naughton.
Plenty drama at the finish with Cork just holding on for a first All-Ireland semi-final place since 2010. It was a great comeback win for Cork as they looked in huge trouble during the second-half. Waterford were left to rue Cork’s powerful charge in the closing ten minutes.

Hard luck Waterford. A very close game and could have gone either way. Waterford peaked too soon in second half. I wish cork the best in the next round. John Mullane today proved he is one of the best Hurlers in the country. Held the Waterford team together. We’re still short a few experienced players but that takes time. All in all a very entertaining game. Come on the Deise!!!!
Sadly Johnathon, by the time the young guys get experienced, guys like Tony, Seamus & Mull will be gone.

Yet again, goals win games. Waterford just never looked like getting one and ultimately that was the difference in the end.

Barry Kelly has always been a shocking referreee. He was worth 4 or 5 points to Cork yesterday, & that is without mentioning how he unbelievably missed the rugby tackle on John Mullane off the ball in injury time yesterday. Waterford should still have won if we’d taken our chances. V disappointing.
