Healy and O’Brien may be Ireland’s only Lions starters – Shane Byrne

The former Ireland and Lions hooker believes Jamie Heaslip is in for a nervy time ahead of Warren Gatland’s squad selection.

THE INJURIES THAT dogged Ireland throughout the Six Nations continued into the Italy game where we lost three bloody important players.

Forwards playing in the backline and medical staff onand off the pitch every two minutes – it was incredible.

Most of the injuries incurred in the campaign where ones picked up from impact. No many players were pulling up or tweaking muscles. The fact remains, however, that we can’t use injuries as an excuse.

It’s a compliment to the bravery of the guys that remained on the pitch. They battled on and could have won the game but let it slip in the last 10 minutes.

It was the management and structure of their game that let them down. Bravery doesn’t win you championships.

Credit where credit is due

Ireland were really pressing when Sergio Parisse was in the sin-bin. They had the Italians going backwards near their tryline and deliberately slowed the ball down.

If the referee, Wayne Barnes, was being consistent, he should have yellow carded one of the Italians because a definite try-scoring chance was denied.

The sum total of everything we put together did not work.

The Italians had a better setpiece – lineout and scrum – they rucked better than us and were more creative. They thoroughly deserved their win.

Sean O’Brien consistently tried hard and Ian Madigan, when he came on, was superb. He attacked the Italian line and really offered Ireland something in attack.

The one positive to take from this championship is that we have blooded a lot of players.

Madigan showed a lot of promise, Craig Gilroy now has a championship under his belt, Iain Henderson looks a decent prospect and we’ll wait for Simon Zebo to come back. There is some real talent in the pool.

Lions selections and Kidney’s future

In terms of the Lions Tour, Brian O’Driscoll has come out of the Six Nations very well. His case for the captaincy has grown, especially after the Wales win over England [and captain Chris Robshaw] at the weekend.

Cian Healy, no doubt, will start and I’d imagine O’Brien will too.

Rob Kearney will travel but, after that, you wouldn’t be betting your house on any other Irish players.

Rory Best was the front-runner for hooker after the first two games but fell away. It is going to be very tough for Jamie Heaslip. The next few weeks will be a nervy time.

As for Declan Kidney, he has his meeting with the IRFU on Wednesday. There should be no panic or scandal but he should be told that his time is up.

I have said it before that Joe Schmidt should be the next coach but, failing that, the IRFU should but the position out there and see what CVs land. It is still a high profile job in world rugby.

After that, it is up to the IRFU whether they want a fesh start or will ask Kidney to go on further with the North America tour and give the new guy time to settle.

  • I’ll be red thumbed out the gates for this.
Zebo is way too hyped right now. His kicking game is pretty poor, his defence is suspect and overall he’s relatively inexperienced (5 caps). There’s a fascination with him in Ireland at the moment. Speaking to friends in the other home nations countries, they are surprised when he’s mentioned in Lions terms (especially as he’s out for ten weeks). If a player from any of the other nations was in this situation with 5 caps to his name we’d be questioning why they are getting a look in. It will be tough to get back from injury and especially to get his speed back which is his main attribute. I’d love to see him on the plane as it would be great for him and Irish rugby but I feel people are going to be disappointed. I hope I’m wrong but I just don’t see it (yet anyway).

Hopefully he proves himself in the coming months and proves me wrong.

On another note I think Gilroy has proved himself this year but we tend to forget Ulster players too often.

    • Id red thumb you for the use of the term “home nations” but thats my inner republican talking. As for Zebo..a good player but this Lions tour is too early for him.Time to give him a chance to get some international experience before we feed him to the lions if ull pardon the pun.

    • Zebo might get in on a similar ticket to Earls in SA. He has a spark that brings something different to the game.

  • Has Sexton retired ?

  • Healy ahead of Gethin Jenkins would be a massive call, especially after the way the Welsh destroyed England last weekend.

Sean O’Brien probably has a better case, but as someone mentioned above, it could be at number 8. Again Wales have a very strong backline, but Faletau is probably the most dislodgeable. It’s very hard to see Ryan Jones and Sam Warburton not in the team. Of course, Jones could be picked at number 8 too with O’Brien at 7 and Warburton at 6 (Tipuric is not out of the question there too).

I have a feeling that despite not having a great 6 Nations that Rory Best might be a starter. I don’t see that any one of Rees, Ford, Youngs, Hibbard or Hartley did any better.

If O’Driscoll and O’Connell are fit and available, they should be starters.

  • Healy will start ! The way the welsh front row destroyed England on Saturday you would have to pick them.

    7 Warburton
    6 O Brien

Tight 5 is too hard to call, the welsh & English will obviously be front runners.
Best lost the hookers jersey I’d put Healy behind them as well. POC(if fit) Ryan and O Mahony possibly to travel. I can’t see him bringing Heaslip. Kearney will travel but he’s way behind Halfpenny at the moment.
The Irish representation is going to be light given the nature of the collective performances in the championship.

  • The level of criticism level at kidney seems strange when this level of delusion exists amongst the “thinking” rugby fans. BoD has been the exceptional centre in NH for years, however apart from the odd flash of brilliance he has been average at best in the 6N. On then plane; certainly. Starting 1st test? maybe. Captain? never. Healy just isn’t one of the best 6 props available. SOB is a way off his form of last year, Kearney too. Zebo has to do a lot more than keepy-ups to justify a place.. I could go on, but a quick look at the results & performances over past 7 weeks says it all for me.

    • Nice one! I also believe BOD, despite obvious intent and enjoyment of game, still didn’t influence our performances in any appreciable way apart from the match against Wales. He HAS been a great player but unfortunately not any longer

The telegraph (English paper) had 6 respected experts (players/coaches etc) all name their test team, all bar one had Drico at 13, with the exception being one had tuilagi there.

    • Did the same experts predict France finishing last in 6N? Italy beating Ireland? Wales thrashing England?

      Just sayin

    • Did you not see O?Discoll in the French match? Leadership qualities are what players gravitate towards. Excuse the clich? but he his a warrior, is the most respected player in Europe on and off the pitch for the last 10 years, and as he showed even during this disaster of a campaign he will never give up and still has the ability to operate at the top level. Not a chance for captain you say…… If that’s not good enough the ozzies are crapping themselves worried about who we have hidden away that’s a cut above him

I don’t know if your serious or trolling again, but I’ll bite.

Warburtons form in last 12 months has been way way too patchy to be captain, Tipuric is making more waves than him

It’s hard to see past BOD as captain (providing his picked obviously), he commands the respect of all the players, will handle the huge media duties without any problem, and is guaranteed to deliver on the pitch.

Barring Paulie getting himself in match shape, it’s Brian’s gig

      Reply
    • POC won’t be captain. The media and ref management in SA were his weakness and he will need to focus on getting to test fitness. In BOD we will trust me thinks.

  • Im afraid Healy ate more grass than any other prop this year and also gave away too many penalties, seems to get injured in most games after 70 mins.
Of the fit players O’Brien and O’Mahoney will go. Sexton, Zebo, Bowe if they recover. Trimble has a chance. No Paul O this time.

    • I was about to slate you but you redeemed yourself. Why has the pr!ck not been cited for his stamp during the Welsh match? He blatantly raked and stamped twice on a Welsh neck and shoulders. The ref saw it and was going to have a word but play went on too long. I have to say I despise the man and if he goes on the Lions then it is a farce. He is an arrogant, useless article.
Tuilagi also showed his brainless rugby style against the welsh. Roberts and ODriscoll to reignite their centre partnership with ODriscoll captain.

    • Roberts and o driscoll….absolutely Heathen, i absolutely defiantly wanna see that again.

    • CA may be arrogant but he’s not useless. A bit quieter this tournament but given a bit of space he’s lethal. BOD not at the required level anymore. Either of the two English 13′s, MT or BT, more effective this year as well as the Welsh, JD. Sorry

    • What’s wrong with people’s full names? Anyway, O Driscoll would start all day long for me. Himself and Roberts are class and I’d love to see them again.

    • Didn’t Ashton have more missed tackles in the 6N than any other player?

I’d also question the statement that Tuilagi has been more effective this year than O’Driscoll. He crashed into defensive lines and then did nothing. Twelvetrees did look good, but didn’t always get his game and is inexperienced.

I didn’t think Davies had the greatest of tournaments, but he may have outperformed O’Driscoll. However, Gatland isn’t going to want to pick the entire Wales XV and he looks one of the easiest to drop.

    • That’s the way Tuilagi plays the game but he contributes around the park and he is mighty effective at it. All the other 13s play slightly different from one another. I just believe that BODs influence on his teams performance has been slightly less than the others mentioned above in his position.

    • I was thinking Tuilagi would get in pre 6N but he was really shown as 1 dimensional during the tournament. If we were playing the springboks I could see an advantage to having a physical but limited player but the ozzies are more skills than brawn, they will neutralise him just like the Welsh I reckon.

  • That’s what I thought Healy and O’Brien may be the only Irish to start on the lion’s first team. I feel Heaslip and Sexton will be among the wild cards. Kearney and O’Driscoll too if lucky. Heaslip’s captaincy was very poor which cost him his no. 8. I can’t answer of how did Kearney lose his form. I think Declan Kidney should stand down as coach. He is at fault for selecting wrong moves in the team. The team needs a bright start with a new coach.

    • A lot of what happened to Kearney was that other countries learned how to play him. Some of his best moments in previous years were when he took a high ball and used it as an attacking opportunity, making 20 yards through his opponents. Notice how few high balls went anywhere near Kearney this year.

      Reply
    • His challenge now is to change his game. He will never get those high balls again at elite level.
