West Cork woman makes debut in Australian legends football league

Linda Holland made her bow for Western Australia Angels last weekend.

A WEST CORK native was part of the Western Australian Angels side that played in their first ever game in the Australian Legends Football League last weekend.

Linda Holland, a 28 year-old from Glengarriff, was in action in the Australian LFL, which is an expansion of the American competition formerly known as the Lingerie Football League. The sport is a women’s seven-on-seven tackle American football league.

Holland and her teammates suffered defeated by six points in their clash against the Victoria Maidens in Melbourne. They face New South Wales Surge this weekend and the Cork woman was delighted to have finally been involved.

“It’s amazing what hard work, dedication and perseverance can get you,’ she told the West-Cork based newspaper ‘The Southern Star’ this week.

“It’s been such an emotional rollercoaster for these last 13 months, between trials, training, team cuts, injuries, being named on the final panel of 20 to then the starting 14.

“Then, three days before the big kick off, to be named as the defensive captain for last Saturday’s game. I honestly have to say it has been one heck of a journey.

“We were very unlucky last weekend, but we’ll take what we’ve learnt and apply it to our first home game this Saturdaynight where we’ll play with our crowd, our black and gold army.”

Is she a tight end or a wide receiver? Doesn’t go into detail what position she plays.

She was named defensive captain so she wouldn’t be tight end or wide receiver, those are offensive positions. She might be a tackle, end, linebacker, corner back or safety.

It’s great to see an Irish person doing well in their chosen sport. Fair play to the LFL for cutting true all the PC stuff. Just give the people what they want. If the girls are happy to play then let them play. More power to them I hope she does really well.

Thanks for the positive comments folks, it’s very much appreciated.
As for the negativity, the airbrushing comment etc, hell no, that’s all me and if you don’t like what I’m doing then ignore it… simple as.
The above is only part of the article from West Cork newspaper The Southern Star. It’s not available on line, I’ll try & put it up on page shortly. Article from back in April is here through http://www.southernstar.ie/News/West-Corks-very-own-Angel-gets-her-wings-Down-Under-10042013.htm.

Also, FYI, I play Defensive End. You can follow my journey on https://www.facebook.com/LindaHollandAngels?fref=ts

I’d say the who’s who of weirdos and creeps would be in the crowds at them games . Although given a free ticket and a good disguise to mask myself from the public I would be first there with my giant foam hand
