CALLING IT A DAY

Limerick's Tommy Stack and Shane Gallagher hang up their boots

Maurice Horan will have to do without two more of his most experienced players after their pair announced their retirement.

INTER-COUNTY FOOTBALLERS Tommy Stack and Shane Gallagher have announced their retirement from the Limerick senior panel.

It is another blow to manager Maurice Horan after the county suffered a number of recent losses to emigration.

Former captain Stack made himself available for selection again last summer having previously retired.

He then went on to play in this year’s Munster and All-Ireland Championships before the Treaty side were eliminated by Kerry in the quarter-final after what was their first appearance at that stage.

Fellow defender Gallagher, meanwhile, has been an ever-present in the Limerick team since his debut in 2006.

Horan told The Score today: “I contacted Tommy last year when we were a bit short on bodies after losing a couple of guys.

“He’s a very experienced footballer, we were looking for some defensive cover and I was glad he came on board.

“I knew after the Kerry game that it was his intention to call it a day so it’s no real surprise. He’s had a fine career in football with Limerick.”

On Gallagher, Horan remained hopeful, adding: “Shane has been a great servant but I know his back has been niggling him and he could probably do with a rest.

“But he’s young and I’ll be contacting him to try change his mind.”
