Tight Affair

Gaffney proves the difference as Limerick edge Sligo on Shannonside

In torrential rain, both sides offered up plenty though the hosts grabbed game-winner in the second half.

Limerick 1-0 Sligo

LIMERICK CLIMBED INTO the top half after a convincing one-nil win over Sligo Rovers.

Rory Gaffney headed the only goal of a lively game played in torrential rain.

The poor weather didn’t dampen spirits as Limerick and Sligo played a very open first forty-five – one in which the hosts dominated.

Cork City loanee Ian Turner was at the centre of most of Limerick’s good work. His first effort of the night came after just eight minutes. He found space down the inside right channel – but his effort went just wide of the near post.

The home side were in firm control, but Sligo looked dangerous on the break. Rafaelle Cretaro fired an effort just wide of Ali Abass’ far post, after cutting in from the right.

The best chance of the opening period fell to the feet of Prince Agyemang.  Rory Gaffney’s deflected effort flew just wide. From the resulting corner, the ball broke to the young Ghanaian, but his drive was cleared off the line.

Limerick hit the front on 52 minutes – a beautifully delivered cross from Patrick Nzuzi was met by Rory Gaffney’s head. He powered his nod across Brush and into the back of the net – his 11th goal since Martin Russell took over at the Blues.

It was only Gaffney that prevented the scoreline from increasing – he spurned a number of opportunities, but Limerick held on to claim a win that gives them an outside chance of finishing ahead of Sligo Rovers – in fifth.
