LIMERICK AVOIDED A shock qualifiers exit at the hands of a determined Antrim side, at the Gaelic grounds, thanks to three second half goals.
Trailing 0-8 to 0-6 at the break, the Treaty County flew out of the traps for the second half and were rewarded with a penalty from Ger Collins on 42 minutes. That made it 1-7 to 0-9 in Limerick’s favour.
Paddy Cunningham, Michael McCann and Paddy McBride were stand-out players for the visitors and kept their side of the scoreboard ticking over. Antrim had earlier lost Justin Crozier to a dislocated elbow injury. John Brudair’s side had the lead but rarely looked comfortable.
A second Collins penalty, after 55 minutes, stretched the home side’s lead to four points. Antrim refused to lie down, however, and tallied four of the next five points to set up a tight finish. With numbers committed up-field in injury time, Limerick broke forward and added a third — Darragh Treacy flicking home — to seal victory.
