Ligament damage sidelines Nick Williams

Ulster back-row Nick Williams is expected to miss up to eight weeks, the province said this afternoon.

ULSTER HAVE BEEN dealt a blow with the news that Nick Williams is to miss eight weeks with a knee injury.

The Kiwi back-row ran in the first try of Ulster’s 23-6 win against Glasgow Warriors on Friday night before limping off in the 63rd minute.

“An assessment this morning confirmed that he sustained medial ligament damage to his left knee and is expected to be out for up to eight weeks,” the province said in a statement this afternoon.

Ulster can clinch a home quarter-final with a win in their final Pool 4 match against Castres Olympique this weekend but Williams’ injury will further weaken a pack already missing captain Johann Muller and Irish international Stephen Ferris.

There was better news for coach Mark Anscombe as it emerged that out-half Paddy Jackson and winger Craig Gilroy should both recover from knocks in time for Saturday’s trip to France.

“Jackson’s ankle is responding well to physiotherapy treatment while Gilroy is following the necessary return-to-play protocol,” Ulster said.

Prop Adam Macklin damaged his knee while playing for the Ravens against Bristol last weekend and his injury will be reviewed in due course.
