AS IT HAPPENED

As it happened: Leicester v Man United, Premier League

Leicester took on Man United, as Louis van Gaal’s side looked to build on last week’s win over QPR.

Hello, and welcome to today’s liveblog. The teams news is out…

MAN UNITED: De Gea, Rafael, Evans, Blackett, Rojo, Blind, Herrera, Di Maria, Falcao, Rooney, Van Persie.

LEICESTER: Schmeichel, De Laet, Morgan (c), Moore, Konchesky, Hammond, Cambiasso, Nugent, Drinkwater, Vardy, Ulloa.

So here’s what happened the last time United played Leicester back in 2004…

Louis van Gaal says he was “not satisfied” with the performances of Rooney and “a striker” and Mata as “a midfield player” of late.

He adds that number 10 is the position in which Rooney thinks he’s best.

Speaking on Sky, Gary Neville says Mata will “always let you down defensively”.

The backlash continues…

We’re underway…

Controversial…

3 mins: First half-chance of the game goes to Leicester.

Nugent hits a cross towards Ulloa, but the defender gets to the ball just ahead of him.

Leicester certainly don’t seem overawed by United’s star-studded lineup early on.

They’ve comfortably matched Van Gaal’s side so far.

10 mins: Great through ball from Di Maria to pick out Van Persie.

However Schmeichel gets down well to deny the Dutchman and United.

GOAL FOR MAN UNITED!

Man United 1-0 Leicester (Van Persie)

Fantastic play by Falcao on his debut, as he beats his man on the left wing and puts in a delicious cross for RVP to head home.

It’s not exactly against the run of play, but Leicester have looked solid up until this point.

GOAL FOR MAN UNITED!

GOAL FOR LEICESTER!

Man United 2-1 Leicester (Di Maria 15, Ulloa)

Phew! Firstly, Di Maria bursts through on goal and audaciously chips it over Schmeichel to score a beautiful goal.

Moments thereafter, a cross is played in to Ulloa who heads home emphatically, partially assisted by some poor marking.

20 mins: Man United look ominously good in attack so far, however they also seem a little vulnerable at the back whenever Leicester counter-attack.

It’s perhaps no surprise, given that their defence is somewhat inexperienced.

So here’s a look at all the goals so far…

I don’t know about everyone else, but that Di Maria goal reminded me a bit of the classic effort below, from ex-United player Karel Poborsky.

30 mins: It’s settled down a bit since that flurry of goals.

United are still looking a bit nervy whenever the game is being played in their half though, with plenty of misplaced passes and other basic errors evident.

32 mins: De Laet has just been booked for an awfully late tackle on Di Maria.

The full-back, who was caught out for United’s first goal, needs to calm down.

40 mins: United have been fairly ordinary in attack since that Leicester goal.

Di Maria has just scuffed a shot from the edge of the area well wide.

42 mins: Vardy powers through on goal, but Blackett makes an excellent challenge to stop him.

Leicester are continuing to pose a considerable threat in attack.

HALF-TIME: LEICESTER 1-2 MAN UNITED

So half-time and this game is far from over, despite some impressive showings from United’s recent signings.

Moments of magic mean the Red Devils lead at the break, though they have occasionally looked vulnerable at the back, particular down Leicester’s right flank.

Nevertheless, there was some doubt about whether the ball was out of play before the cross for Leicester’s goal, so there’ll be plenty of debate about that if United don’t ultimately pick up all three points.

The second half is underway…

47 mins: Falcao almost mirrors Di Maria’s first-half brilliance.

The star receives the ball on the edge of the area and chips the goalkeeper, but unlike his colleague in the first half, he can only find woodwork.

Evans had to be replaced by Smalling in the first half.

It looks a bad injury, judging by this picture.

Evans

54 mins: It’s been a fairly assured start to the second half for United so far.

Louis van Gaal’s side have controlled the play for the most part.

GOAL FOR UNITED!

Leicester 1-3 Man United (Herrera 56)

Sublime from the Spaniard! A Di Maria shot falls into his path and he backheels it past the goalkeeper.

Replays suggest he definitely meant it.

PENALTY TO LEICESTER!

GOAL FOR LEICESTER!

Leicester 2-3 Man United (Nugent 62)

It’s a controversial decision. Vardy shoulders Rafael off the ball before the defender gets up and does something similar to the attacker, only for the referee to penalise him and award the hosts a penalty

David Nugent then blasts it home.

GOAL FOR LEICESTER!

Leicester 3-3 Man United (Cambiasso 64)

Unbelievable scenes, as the ball falls to Cambiasso on the edge of the box, and he blasts it home.

The stadium is now rocking, unsurprisingly.

So here are the last three goals and that penalty incident.

71 mins: Januzaj replaces Falcao while goal hero Cambiasso goes off for Andy King.

What a final few minutes this looks set to be…

75 mins: De Laet makes a good run down the right and plays it to King, who shoots narrowly wide.

Meanwhile, Mata has replaced Di Maria, as United search for a winner.

GOAL FOR LEICESTER!

Leicester 4-3 Man United (Vardy 79)

De Laet dispossesses Mata and sprints forward, before playing a lovely through ball to Vardy.

The attacker, who was playing non-league football two years ago, finishes coolly to put Leicester ahead.

PENALTY TO LEICESTER!

TYLER BLACKETT SENT OFF!

GOAL FOR LEICESTER!

Leicester 5-3 Man United (Ulloa 83)

Vardy sprints through on goal and Blackett brings him down. The defender receives a red card, as he’s the last man.

Ulloa then makes no mistake with the penalty to surely secure a famous victory for the Foxes.

Here’s a look at the two most recent goals and that penalty decision.

90 mins: Vardy gets a deserved man-of-the-match award.

There will be six minutes of added time.

90 mins: The game is petering out now, with United seemingly realising they’re beaten…

FULL-TIME: LEICESTER 5-3 MAN UNITED

Incredible stuff! Leicester come from behind to beat Man United 5-3.

The visitors will point to the highly questionable penalty decision that got the Foxes back into the game, but in truth they still weren’t good enough at the back to prevail.

It’s the stuff of dreams for Leicester, while United may now be regretting their failure to sign a top-class centre-back during the summer.

Right, that’s all from me for now.
