Legendary US commentator Larry Munson dies

The voice of the Georgia Bulldogs died last night after complications from pneumonia.

LARRY MUNSON, THE legendary play-by-play announcer for the Georgia Bulldogs, died last night following complications from pneumonia. He was 89.

Famous for his unapologetic and one-sided commentary, Munson became one of America’s best-loved personalities during his 42 years calling college football matches at the University of Georgia.

In all that time he missed just one game — following back surgery in October 1990 — before his failing health forced him to call only the Bulldogs’ home games in 2007.

A veritable institution, Munson retired in September 2008 after an estimated 500 games at the microphone.

One of his most famous calls came in the dying minutes of the Bulldogs’ 1980 comeback over Florida, when Munson cheered receiver Lindsay Scott the whole length of the field as he scored a game-winning 93-yard touchdown.
