Team of the Week

Here’s our SSE Airtricity League Premier Division Team of the Week

Cork have a healthy representation in midfield — but who else made the cut this week?

Goalkeeper

Dean Delany (Bohemians) – The Bohs netminder was the busier of the two keepers in Oriel Park and two stoppage-time saves, including a stunning one from John Mountney, secured the visitors a point against Dundalk.

Defenders

Ryan McBride (Derry City) – Another battling performance from the Derry centre half as he broke down a lot of the St Pat’s attacks. Didn’t let Christy Fagan out of sights throughout.

Conor Kenna (Shamrock Rovers) – Marshalled the Rovers defence throughout against Sligo and made a timely goal-line intervention late on to stop a certain equaliser.

Alan McNally (Drogheda United) – Played his part in Drogs’ first clean sheet of the season and was unlucky not to score at the other end with a great header.

Midfield

Liam Kearney (Cork City) – “The Conna Maradona” only came on at half-time but showed some brilliant touches, setting up one and scoring another in the 3-0 win.

Billy Dennehy (Cork City) – Another goal and assist as the elder Dennehy brother continued his brilliant start to the season.

Jason Hughes (Limerick) –  Lims’ standout performer. Tirelessly worked the Drogheda midfield and won possession a number of times in crucial areas.

Richie Towell (Dundalk) –  Energetic and inventive throughout, the former Celtic man always looked one step ahead in midfield against Bohs. Denied a goal by a good stop from Dean Delany.

Chris Forrester (St Pat’s) – A constant threat to the Derry defence and came so close to breaking the deadlock with two great strikes in either half.

Forwards

Cillian Morrison (UCD) – A 25-yard curler was the pick of the bunch in his hattrick against Bray.

Declan ‘Fabio’ O’Brien (Drogheda United) – Goalscorer supreme. Was in the right place at the right time again against Limerick and led the line very well.

Brilliant poster sets the scene for Cork City’s top-of-the-table clash with Shamrock Rovers
