Le Tissier: Southampton have become a laughing stock

Strong words from the club’s best ever player.

SOUTHAMPTON LEGEND MATT LE TISSIER has described the club as a laughing stock, after it was revealed that Nigel Adkins found out he had lost his job on the television.

Adkins was axed as Saints boss on Friday, despite leading the side to a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge against European champions Chelsea two days previously.

Southampton are currently 15th in the Premier League, three points outside the relegation zone.

That fact, however, did not stop owner Nicola Cortese from replacing Adkins with Mauricio Pocchetino.

“Nigel Adkins is probably relieved now that he’s not answerable to Nicola Cortese,” said Sky Sports pundit Le Tissier.

“It seems to be the way the club’s being run under the chairman. Nothing’s surprising and it’s a bit of a laughing stock.”

The Mirror reports that Adkins found out he had been given the chop on a news report moments before being told face-to-face by Cortese.

“Nigel is philosophical about things and was told it’s nothing personal,” a source revealed.

“He’s known it could have been coming at any time for a few weeks. But it’s still a horrible way to find out. It’s been hard to work like that but he’s done exceptionally well.”
