Last minute goal secures a point for Saints as Shamrock Rovers lose more ground

Pat Flynn claimed a point for his side with a fine strike in Sunday’s Dublin Derby at Tallaght Stadium. Cork and Bohemians also drew.

SHAMROCK ROVERS OLD boy Pat Flynn pounced to strike a last-minute equaliser for St Patrick’s Athletic on Sunday.

Rovers were seeking revenge against the Saints following a heavy defeat earlier in the season and they looked the sharper of the two sides in the afternoon clash at Tallaght Stadium.

The league champions had the better of a cagey first 45 minutes but  Brendan Clarke was solid behind some desperate defending.

However the most clear-cut chance of the half fell to the visitors as Oscar Jansson was forced into a diving save to keep out an Anto Flood header.

The home side’s pressure did not tell until there were just 19 minutes left on the clock.

Billy Dennehy whipped in a dangerous free-kick and Craig Sives did enough to flick a header past the sprawling Clarke.

Pushing for a second

The Hoops were not content with the 1-0 lead and were almost rewarded for their ambition when Sives went close with another header.

Clarke kept his side in the game in the closing stages as he saved magnicently from Rovers’ sharp-shooter Gary Twigg with 87 minutes on the clock.

The goalkeepers heroics meant all the more to St Patrick’s as Flynn controlled a John Russell cross on his chest and slammed home the equaliser to heap further pressure on Rovers’ manager Stephen Kenny.

In the other Sunday fixture, Cork drew 1-1 with Bohemians. Darryl Hogan put the home side ahead at Turner’s Cross but another late goal settled affairs.

Derek Pender was taken down inside the box as play seeped into stoppage time and Keith Ward slotted home the penalty.
