Lar Corbett return 'good for hurling'

Cyril Farrell insists the Thurles man’s return is needed by both Tipperary and the game itself.

THE GAME OF hurling needs Lar Corbett back on the pitch, according to Sunday Game analyst Cyril Farrell.

The Thurles Sarsfields man will return to training with Tipperary this week, the Premier county board announced last night.

The former Hurler of the Year retired from intercounty action over the winter citing work commitments, but with Tipp’s Munster campaign on the horizon he’s decided to make a comeback.

“It’s brilliant news really that he’s back,” Farrell said on Morning Ireland today. “He’s a very popular player, he’s an icon within the game. Tipp need him and so does hurling.  The whole country needs him really because you need these heroes playing.”

The statement, released on the county’s official website,  explained:

“Tipperary Senior Hurling Manager Declan Ryan and Tipperary County Board are pleased to announce the return of Lar Corbett to the Tipperary Senior Hurling panel.“Over the last few months Lar has been heavily involved in developing his business activities and is now once again in a position to give the necessary commitment to being a member of the panel. Lar will recommence training with the panel immediately.”

And Farrell insists the lack of game time will not hamper Corbett.

“Usually during the wintertime Lar would be taking it quite easy. At this stage of his career, Lar needs more nourishment than punishment. He’s a natural hurler, very gifted hurler… he’ll be vital to the Tipperary championship this year.”

Corbett is considered one of the county’s star players, having helped them win two All-Ireland Championships, in addition to garnering three All-Star awards.
