THEY ARE TWO of the greatest hurlers in the inter-county game but it was not the best of afternoons for Tipperary’s Lar Corbett and Kilkenny’s JJ Delaney.
The pair were in opposition in the Division 1 hurling league final which Kilkenny triumphed in by 2-17 to 0-20 in Nowlan Park.
But Lar and JJ saw their involvement in the game cut short when referee Barry Kelly showed the pair red cards in the early stages of the second-half.
6. It all stemmed from an off the ball scuffle which started here…
5. Kept going here…
4. And here…
3. Then they hit the floor with goalkeeper Eoin Murphy joining in…
2. And others soon followed…
1. Before referee Barry Kelly sent the pair to the line…
That Corbett really is a clown.
Amazing the amount of high tackles Tipp are allowed away with
Stevie you watching games again without your glasses!!!
Tut Tut !!!now stevie get a grip after all killkenny introduced the Tyrone type tackling into hurling and if Tipp were at it today it was just to match ye lot.And if teams do that ye can be beaten and sure ye will very shortly have to Accept that.
John, John,John, learn to lose with a bit of dignity, God knows you should be well used to it.
Flashy surely you can do better than that !!Now lets be honest it sounds just a bit ,well “Yesterday” know what i mean ?? probably not!
Amazing the amount of steps killkenny are allowed take with the ball eg.colin fennelly????
As an out an out hurling and Kilkenny supporter, I can’t condone Delaney’s actions. A punch in the head is very bad and beneath a player of his quality. Most people know Lar is no saint and must have done something to get Delaney going for blood, because he is usually a very sporting fellow, still doesn’t excuse Delaney though, and it’s not Lars fault either, that has grown to be part of the game. But there is fierce bad blood between Kilkenny and Tipp in recent years and i’m sure there is a bit of revenge in the players minds when they step out on the pitch. But if Paraic Maher can get away with shattering Michael Rice’s hand without any punishment or even an apology, likewise with Iarla Tannian shattering T.J Reid’s kneecap in the final replay, then the GAA have no one to blame but themselves and the refs for not managing discipline properly. Delaney deserved red and a suspension, not sure about Lar because I don’t know what he did. Overall the ref was poor today on more than one occasion.
Shane Bourke deserved the line more.
A yellow card was handed out for a head high challenge on Rice that should have been a straight red.
The first picture is the stage where Lar digged JJ with the hurl. The butt of the hurl in that picture ends up in JJ’s guts which made JJ go after Lar.
A gutless horrible stroke from Lar that deserved a red card. At least JJ acted like a man and used his fist even though Lar was wearing a helmet.
Punching a player on the ground: very noble!!
Digging a player in the guts with your hurl, very noble??? At least JJ was a man and used his fist unlike the coward Corbett
I think they were both on the ground at that stage Marty!
Really….?
I’ll admit I’m (obviously) always a bit biased towards my county but I don’t understand how people are defending JJ after the footage that has gone out. I know that there was surely a bit of hitting and shoving before the bit that was shown on tv but that’s no excuse. A dig with a hurley does not condone punching a player in the head while he’s on the ground, with another player added in on top of that, KK’s goalie to add insult to injury (how was there no yellow card given there?)
Regardless, it’s terrible to see any kind of violent behaviour on the pitch and it really puts a downer on the game as a hole. I just don’t think there is any defending to the tv footage that went out this evening. It was disgraceful behaviour on both their parts, for men that are supposed to be role models to youngsters but especially Delaney to demonstrate such violence towards a defenseless player.
You’re assuming a lot from that photo. Guts is a bit of a broad term, and you should call it a hurley. I’m not calling Corbett a saint, but defending Delaney and making him out be a hero for what he did is ridiculous
I’m not assuming anything from the photo Marty. I was at the game and saw it happen. The same way the umpires saw it and reported him to the ref. You hardly think he was reported to the ref for getting a punch in the helmet and that he was totally innocent?
Sarah, how does a dig in the guts with a weapon ie. a hurl not condone a punch to a helmet with a fist? Lar Corbett used a weapon on JJ Delaney and could have caused him serious injury, JJ tried to punch him on his helmet!! You do the math at which you think is worse.
Have you ever been digged in the guts by a hurl or had your helmet punched during a game?
No Lar is not totally innocent, but your defence of Delaney is plain silly
As a spectator I tend, generally, not to wear helmets to matches but either way, no I have not!
Ok lets all get our knickers out of a twist with this ‘dig in the guts’ business. He got a whack of a hurley, fair enough, that happens frequently in matches, maybe not always so intentional! I think you might be turning a blind eye to how often players give sneaky digs when they think the spotlight isn’t on them, the difference today seems to be the way that Delaney reacted and so the umpires made it known to the ref what they saw Corbett do as well. And I think why it isn’t condoned is because he lashed out and over reacted to the situation. I haven’t ever seen a player before react like that to a dig. At the end of the day no one was really hurt, except maybe Delaney’s hand but i’ll leave the fault of that be on him and his anger ;)
Also, ‘weapon’…. haha come off it Steve
@Sarah Conlon, what Daniel said there. I’m done having this conversation with weirdos.
Jeez you could at least spell my name right, it’s right in front of you! No worries. you know what they say, if you can’t handle the heat… Feels kinda shit to be called a weirdo by an egg though… :/
Was “Humpty Dumpty” a hurler??? and now we all know what happened to him.
Lar with cracked ribs ,Steve your full of shite
Relax people, JJ couldn’t give a flying fffff. He’s at home polishing his box of medals! It’s a contact sport, it goes both ways
Couldnt care less if he was at home polishing his k…”Contact sport” me eye pulling and dragging and off the ball stuff more like.Brian fergusson cody calls it “manly stuff”.
The only player who was injured in this altercation was JJ when he punched Corbetts’s helmet and when he got the hurl dug into his guts from him too.
Corbett walked off the pitch uninjured but people want a few months ban for JJ. Is that going to happen for this incident considering the GAA turned a blind eye to Paraic Maher destroying Michael Rice’s hand last year which put him in hospital for weeks and out of work and hurling for months?? Lets remember they also turned a blind eye to Iarla Tannion shattering TJ Reid’s kneecap last year which also put him in hospital for weeks and out of work and hurling for months!
Lar will be able to pull pints this evening and hurl tomorrow if he wants. He will surely get a ban for striking with the hurl though. JJ striked with the fist, is that covered by the same rule? Don’t think so.
“Stevie me lad “your all excited again !!! hang up your hurl now and go for a pint, talk bout the weather to the farmers in kk and the glory days to come in the summer Emmmm.
I just have to laugh how blinded you are in Kilkenny… You have your hurlers made out to be angels when for years you had the dirtiest hurler in Ireland playing for he at full back.. Noel Hickey broke Eoin Brislane’s hand in a league final, then when he pulled up with a hamstring injury against Limerick in an All-Ireland he used his “weapon” of a hurl to strike Brian Begley across the hamstring as he ran by him.. Neither time did he see red.. Are those actions on the same scale as the ones you mention or should we ignore them because they are Kilkenny hurlers.. I could continue with more incidents but I’m sure I have enough to get my point across
“across the hamstring”…hilarious.
Think that injury comment will have to be revoked after Lar was sent to hospital with broken ribs! Much and all as you saw at the match, it must have been through those rose tinted glasses of yours, Steve.
I laugh at that myself given how stupid it sounds simple mistake that late should of read thighs
Black and Amber more like!
Thanks hank for explaining why delaney was punching Lar in the head as he lay on the ground,he’s clown ! and maybe delaney is afraid of clowns
Nope I just seen him run around croke park like a clown one day and then heard him talk on a tv show another time- absolute brain dead fool. Borderline ret@rd..
All of you knocking Delaney obviously don’t know him. Pure legend and power house of the game. Tough as teak and not dirty. As for little nancy boy lar just go and hang up the hurl. Think he obsessed with our lads. If not following poor tommy he like an ould fly annoying our JJ
photographer should be ashamed of himself, photos of nothing.
To be honest, the red card incident, was the least of it. The so-called fans were an absolute disgrace on the day, completely lacking in any semblence of sportmanship. It is shameful to hear GAA supporters behaving like they are on a soccer terrace, booing opposing teams as they come out onto the pitch. These guys are amateurs, putting their heart and soul into a game and this is the reception they can expect! Worse again, young children are witnessing this behaviour. Certainly, referees and match officals need to take more control of the on pitch antics and off the ball behaviour. However, so-called ‘fans’ need to look to their behaviour before what we love about this game is lost. Reading some of the comments on this site certainly makes me question if some people are genuine hurling fans, with any real understanding or appreciation of the game. Quite honestly, the level of personal criticism, directed at quality players and quite unconnected with thier ability on the pitch, from anonymous surces, is both as shameful as it is pathetic.
Hurling is with out a doubt one of the greatest games in the world and is not for the faint of heart. What is wrong?
Camera positions and coverage terrible. Referee’s? One ref needed for each half of pitch, game is too fast for just one. Umpires where do they find them? We need better officiating end of story. Any player that steps on the pitch for a game of hurling is a warrior. Stop blaming the players and lets focus on the real problem, complete and utter incompetence from officials. The GAA is completely at fault not the players.
