Canning takes aim at ‘unsporting’ Shefflin ahead of hurling final replay

The Portumna man had plenty to say about the Cats yesterday.

SUNDAY GAME ANALYST Michael Duignan says Joe Canning should have kept his mouth shut about Kilkenny in the run up to the All-Ireland hurling final replay at the end of the month.

The Galway talisman was in Thurles yesterday at an  U-21 hurling championship press event in his role as a ‘Breaking Through Player of the Year Judge’ but the focus was on the senior decider rematch on 30 September.

The counties face off again after a thrilling showpiece last time out of course, a game in which Henry Shefflin decided to take a point rather than go for a goal from a late penalty and the respective managers Anthony Cunningham and Brian Cody clashed on the sideline over the awarding of a late free to the Leinster champions.

Canning converted it and the game was drawn but after comments in which he suggested Shefflin was ‘unsporting’ and JJ Delaney was dismayed at the Ballyhale Shamrock man’s penalty decision, the replay may now be even spicier.

“I doesn’t sound good to be calling a player like Henry Shefflin unsporting,” Duignan said earlier. “I’m just surprised that Joe was even there at a press conference yesterday and to be talking about the match last Sunday. He could have talked about the 21s, that’s what he was there for.

“There was already enough of a build-up to the replay. This is certainly going to add huge spice to the fire. It will be defused as I say but it certainly won’t be forgotten and JJ Delaney won’t forget what Joe said about him either and Henry Shefflin won’t forget it. But look it’s like everything, when the ball is thrown in the next day the game will take on a life of its own. I think that’s Brian Cody’s favourite statement,” the Offaly man told Des Cahill on Morning Ireland.

Canning had called into question Shefflin’s sportsmanship, admitting the Cats are ‘cuter’.

“In one instance in the first half, Henry ran 30 or 40 yards down the field and was giving out to Barry Kelly and Damien Hayes for a free. That’s not sportsmanlike either at the same stage. That’s the way it goes… that’s probably the experience they have.

“Hopefully we can get that and use it to our advantage as well. You need everything you can get during those games.”

  • And it’s not unsportsmanlike to criticize in the media a fellow player for something every player is guilty of and that’s complaining to the ref, or it’s not unsportsmanlike to raise the point that one player was unhappy with decision to go for a point from the penalty?

  • I heard excerpts interview on newstalk this am. The whole thing is being blown out of proportion. Joe was actually praising Kilkenny for their gamesmanship and was in know way bitter. He was basically saying how experienced Kilkenny were and how Galway needed to learn from them. Ps I’m not from Galway.

Duignan says he’s surprised Joe Canning was talking about the senior game when he was there in relation to the U21s. Wonder who brought it up! Would I be naive to think that maybe, just maybe, a journalist raised the matter of the senior game and Joe responded!
Personally think too much talking goes on about sport of all types.
Let the talking be done on the sports arena!

  • No harm in what he said, but you can be sure it’ll be blown up by the media and if Cody doesn’t use it as fuel for the fire for the replay I’d be surprised. Kilkenny don’t need any help when it comes to building causes to keep them going. Might’ve been better served keeping schtum Joe!

  • My intial reaction was it was good to hear something other than the party line and the norm being repeated time and time again but thought he was foolish for bringing more pressure on himself and antagonising Kilkenny….But then I got to thinking, Joe can’t put more pressure in himself regardless of what he says, all the pressure is on him regardless. And Kilkenny have enough incentive to win this all ireland, again, regardless of what Joe says.
All in all it just makes for a better side show for supporters!

  • Its refreshing to hear a player tell it like it is , and a bit rich to hear A professional pundit like Michael Duignan , criticise him. Are people not sick to death of pundits minding their
jobs, watching their backs, afraid of upsetting RTE Or theGAA hierarchy, by actually calling it like it is. If henry ran 40 Yards to berate a ref, then, joe is right, or if jj has an opinion, let’s hear it,and if a policy of bullying officials has grown and worked for a team, what’s wrong wit highlighting it, who are we afraid of offending, fair play to joe, everyone in the country including the pundits saw Henry and Brian’s antics on Sunday, he is just the first public figure to say it.

    • When Sheflin nearly lost his eyesight with a Hurley poked through the visor of his helmet sure ’twas an accident such double standards amongst GAA supporters makes me sick.I am thinking of abandoning the game I loved and supported all my life.whats happened to the appreciation of the other team.In this hurling campaign I have never witnessed such bitterness against one county.we have become a bitter country who begrudges success at any level,Sport,Business or personal. We love loosers eg the Euros.maybe that’s what we are becoming.

  • Ah, the innocence of youth, meet the arrogance of hype.

Referee gave Kilkenny “very easy frees”? This, followed by intimations Barry Kelly had a good game? While Shefflin was “not sportsmanlike” for giving the ref stick over a free in the first half? He knows all about these things, but conveniently has no opinion on the one he got in the last puck of the match saying, “I don’t know – to be straight up about it I didn’t see it. I was over the far side, in at full-forward. I didn’t actually watch the match since”. Or, for instance, the fact that Skehills save though technically a free from him lying on the ball should have resulted in a penalty, due to a hurl being thrown across Fennelly from the back as he shot, which is a personal foul. Or, the “sportsmanlike” behaviour of Tannion amongst others going down like a lady of the evening, time wasting at every opportunity. But then, Joe didn’t watch the match, did he? So how could he be expected to know? Why look at the speck in your neighbours eye when clearly you have a plank in yours? Opinions will always be right when they are accompanied by arrogance and a lack of recourse to any evidence that might exist to the contrary. So never mind the details, Hubris will eventually meet its Nemesis. Keep talking Joe

    • Kilkenny are experts at throwing hurls across players going in on goal, I believe they’re responsible for it being in vogue these days. Paul Murphy demonstrated that again for Burke’s goal (which you forgot to mention) but of course Burke, like Lar in 2010 and unlike Fennelly, managed to score. You could have added more colour to your comment about Shefflin ‘giving the ref stick.’ How about ‘running 40 yards across the pitch to give the ref stick?’ Canning’s comments are pretty innocent if you listen to them but they are interesting in terms if the fact that Shefflin is designated to put pressure on refs because of his stature. Jamsie O’Connor mentioned how in the Leinster Final Brian Hogan twice pulled back Galway attackers going through and didn’t get booked for one of them but when Hynes did same thing in 2nd half Shefflin went mental and Hynes was booked. Shefflin was clearly ‘bould’ all match, he gratuitously head-butted Tannian in the stomach in search of an extra ten yards which the ref fell for, accused Fergal Moore of diving when he himself had blatantly tripped him. Canning’s comments, all in all were more interesting from a tactical point of view (in terms of pressuring refs through Shefflins stature) than they were controverisal

  • Galway know at this stage they’ve unsettled the Cats and this is just a continuation of it. He was pretty much just stating a fact. In my opinion no one should be trying to remonstrate with a ref at any period of a game. Like it or not hes paid to call it on way or the other. Ps I’m a neutral here as a corkman

  • I take my hat off to Kilkenny, they are a fabulous team to watch. However there is a cuteness about them in terms of cynical fouling, this fist pump after they win a free and then the intimidation from Brian Cody of the referee and opposing manager. Look at Shefflin’s face after the Leinster Final defeat. Despite having 13 Leinster medals from 1998 to present day Henry was in a sulk. I completely acknowledge that he strives to be the best but that was just pathetic. What’s the difference between 13 and 14 Leinster titles? Could he not be happy for his fellow amateur sportsmen who put in as much if not more dedication to win their first?

Funny you should mention the fist pump after winning a free. The first time I saw a Kilkenny player do it was in the final and I was surprised. It is quite frequent in another county accompanied by at least two mini jumps. Not an edifying spectacle and one I would dearly love to see eliminated.

The f%#ks I could not give about what Duignan has to say on any topic. I didn’t realise this site was so hard up to fill space. The only point of interest here is that Cody let him out of his pocket between broadcasts.

It’s always a shame when impressive players metamorphose into meedjah-eejits once they stop playing. Regan is another of that ilk.
