KEITH HOGAN WON the bragging rights over his brother and Kilkenny senior Brian when reigning champions Clara won today’s county SHC quarter-final against O’Loughlin Gaels by 2-14 to 2-12.

Keith hit 0-8, six from frees, to ensure Clara booked their place in the last four after today’s game. The novelty and intrigue was created by the fact that he was in direct opposition to his brother Brian, a multi All-Ireland winner with Kilkenny.

Here’s how the brothers ended up playing for different clubs. When Brian was born, the Hogan family lived in Kilkenny city and he played for the local O’Loughlin Gaels club.

The family then moved to Clara, just outside Kilkenny city, before Keith was born. Brian continued to play for O’Loughlin Gaels as he stayed going to St John’s NS in Kilkenny city. Keith attended primary school in Clara and that then became his club.

Today’s game saw O’Loughlin Gaels in front by 0-5 to 1-1 at the end of the opening quarter but Clara pulled back to draw level at 2-3 to 0-9 at half-time.

Clara kicked on in the second-half and were in front by 2-9 to 0-10 entering the closing ten minutes of the game. A late O’Loughlin Gaels surge yielded two goals but Clara held on for a two-point win.

Carrickshock and Rower-Inistioge could not be separated in the first of today’s two Kilkenny senior quarter-finals.

Playing with the advantage of a strong wind in the opening half at Thomastown, Ciarán Ryan, Michael Grace and Joe Lyng helped Rower into a three point lead after six minutes.

It would take Carrkickshock 17 minutes to open their account through Richie Power but two further frees from Grace and a Padraig Lyng point saw last year’s All-Ireland intermediate champions into a five point lead four minutes from the break.

However, two Richie Power frees and a John Power score brought Carrickshock within three points at half-time; 0-4 to 0-7.

Though Grace added yet another free to his total just after the break, Carrickshock took advantage of the wind now blowing in their favour and were level by 48 minutes thanks to further points from Richie Power, Paddy Mulcahy and Kevin Farrell.

With Kieran Joyce and Farrell trading frees to make it 0-11 apiece on 54 minutes, Richie Power was then shown the line for a second yellow card.

Two minutes from time, Carrickshock took their first lead of the day through Jamie Power but Grace stepped up again and pointed a free at the death to send the game to replay.
