KIERAN MCGEENEY IS playing an ‘important role’ within the Tipperary setup and providing ‘invaluable experience’ to Eamon O’Shea’s squad.
The Armagh football selector is involved with Tipperary’s backroom team this season after accepting an invitation to come on board by O’Shea.
McGeeney was asked by O’Shea to work on the mental aspects of preparation with the Tipperary squad. Tipperary assistant boss Michael Ryan has explained what McGeeney has brought to their setup.
“Kieran plays an important role. The experience that Kieran brings is invaluable and it’s invaluable on a few levels. He’s a great source of information and experience for us, albeit in a different, related sport as far as I’m concerned.
“We don’t see Kieran much. I’ve seen him probably three times since he came on board but he meets the players periodically. When you think about Kieran McGeeney, you think of excellence. If it helps us take a step towards excellence and a better performance, we’ll be delighted.”
Tipperary are currently preparing for Sunday’s Allianz hurling league final against Kilkenny before their Munster championship meeting with Limerick on June 1st.
Despite the recent managerial turmoil that Limerick have experienced, Ryan is adamant that Tipperary will not fall into a trap of complacency.
“From a GAA perspective, I’m sure they could do without it. From our perspective, our focus will be, look, don’t even waste any energy, don’t form any opinions, and I know that’s a very difficult thing.
“It’s nothing to do with us. From a Tipperary perspective, what we will be saying is it’s business as usual. Do not underestimate Limerick.
“I think, to be honest, it’s not that we deliberately underestimated Limerick but we got it wrong this time last year and specifically in this period between league final and playing Limerick whatever number of weeks later.
“We’re highly aware that we’re moving into a very important period for ourselves.”
