Waters eager for silverware after getting off the mark

The winger was on target in his first competitive game for Shamrock Rovers last night.

KIERAN MARTY WATERS is living the dream having joined the club he supports and scoring his first competitive goal last night.

The 23-year-old winger signed for Shamrock Rovers on a two-year deal during the close season after making a name for himself as one of the Airtricity League’s most exciting attacking talents at Bray Wanderers.

The added pressure which comes with playing for the Hoops is not lost on Waters who knows all about the club as a former season ticket holder who travelled to White Hart Lane to watch them face Spurs in the 2011 Europa League.

“I support Shamrock Rovers so I’m well aware that there is an expectation,” he told TheScore.ie. “I’ve sat in he stands and watched the games and I’ve also played against Rovers for Bray.

“The season before I broke through at Bray, I had a season ticket and went to nearly every game. I went to White Hart Lane when they played Spurs, I was the Juventus game and I had a ticket to see Real Madrid in Tallaght but had cash in as I was playing a match for Bray’s U20s.”

Waters was on target in the 5-1 Leinster Senior Cup win over Drogheda United last night and hopes he can do enough to persuade Trevor Croly to give him a regular starting berth this season.

“I’d love to be out every game but there is such a strong squad there with so many good players and I’m only in so I’m going to have to work hard.

“I train the way I play and I have energy to burn so I’ll use it in training and matches. I’ll always give as much as I can give and with a bit of luck that will see me into the team.”

It is three years since Rovers last win the title and after a disappointing campaign in 2013, Croly will be desperate to deliver. Waters too is hungry for some silverware.

“I wanted to win cups with Bray but it wasn’t to be. Now I’m here I would love a league medal. At the end of the day they all go into the trophy cabinet. You want to look back and say I played for Shamrock Rovers and won league titles. That would be great.”
