WATERFORD’S KEVIN PHELAN has booked a spot at this month’s US Open.
The Irish amateur, who is based in the US, won a sectional qualifier at Ritz-Carlton Members Golf Club in Florida on Monday to earn one of three places up for grabs by carding rounds of 65 and 70.
It is the second time the 22-year-old has made the grade as he also qualified for Pebble Beach as a teenager in 2010.
“I just played kind of steady, leaving myself tap-ins all day,” Phelan told the Sarasota Herald Tribune. “I had one three-putt on 16. Other than that, the pace was dead-on, all day.”
