Kevin McStay was asked about the speculation on The Sunday Game by presenter Des Cahill.

'I might get a phone call at least' -- Kevin McStay admits interest in discussing Mayo job

The Sunday Game analyst is many Mayo fans’ pick to succeed James Horan.

THE FRONTRUNNER FOR the vacant Mayo senior football manager’s job has strongly hinted at his desire to discuss the position with the county board.

Kevin McStay is many supporters’ preference to succeed James Horan who quit the post after the championship exit to Kerry on Saturday evening on Limerick.

“People are talking about that,” said McStay on the Sunday Game tonight. “I hope I have the respect of the Mayo GAA public that at least I might get a phone call. I might get a short one, a long one; I don’t know.

“But tonight isn’t really about that. Tonight is about a team that’s taking a deep breath and reflecting on the season that’s behind them. I’ll say this Des — and it’s not a rallying call or anything, it’s a fact — we’re a very resilient race of people.

“We will be back for the national league and the championship again with the same determination and maybe even more. You don’t know where this mad game of football leads you — look at happened today with Dublin and Donegal.”

The army officer led St Brigid’s to win the All-Ireland club title in 2013, in a management team with Mayo great Liam McHale, who is tipped to form a new ticket should McStay land the top job.

Would be a great choice it might be just what mayo need to finally get their overdue all-ireland. St brigids where like the mayo of the club championship winning connachts but not quite able to win the all-ireland he came in and brought it to them in his 1st year which shows his credentials and maybe he can do the same for mayo.

McStay also gave a shrewd and castigating review of the awful refereeing performance on Saturday – highlighting an utterly abject display by Mr Reilly.

I’m surprised you are admitting that! I met a Meath man yesterday said he is a terrible ref but they seem to love him gets all the big games.

Fair play to him, ’twas refreshing to hear a bit of straight talk, when asked if he was interested , he didn’t fudge , straight yes, and I hope he gets it .

hI – aside from the dismal refereeing, Mayo beat themselves in the end by loosing to much possession -compare them to Donegal, in that respect, where there was all for one and one for all passing of the ball and that made the difference. In simple terms better just kick the ball, even wide than give away the ball to the goalie or opposition players.Mayo team needs to get some savvy into them -no killer instinct and that’s the eternal problem with them also.
